De. A. R. Duncan returned home on Friday last from the United States after a successful course of three years studying medicine, in the Universities of Pennsylvania and Vermont, from the latter of which he obtained his degree. The University of Vermont is, we believe, one of the few American Medical Colleges which are recognized in Great Britain. We congratulate Dr. Duncan, and wish him continued success.

A curious experiment, according to the Paris newspapers, has recently been made with wine in that city. A current of elec- tricity was passed through a small cask of sour wine, and at the end of a few days the wine was found to be greatly improved in | quality, and to have acquired that flavor | which has hitherto been sapposed to come of age. lit is said that the discovery of this new maturing process is owing to the accident of a thunderstorm having greatly improved a| cask of bad wine in the cellars of a vintner of

Serreme Court.—To-day the Court is engaged trying a case between Dr. Robertson, of Crapaud, and George Howatt, of the same place. Itis aw action founded on dealings extending over years. The most important case tried this term was the Trainor- Wright case, Our readers will remember the falling of the front of the brick building, on Prince street, owned by Mr. Wright, when a man named Trainor was killed. The recent suit was brought on by the heirs of the deceased te recover damages. The law appears to be very strony against owners of unsafe build- ings, and the only question that appears to have been left to the jury in the present case was the quantity of damages. The jury found a verdict of $550 -$350 for the widow and $200 for the soa,

We have had placed on our table a small pamphlet intituled “* Engineering Notes in Ceylon,” a paper read at a meeting of the Institute of Civil Engineers, Ireland, on the 7th June last by H. ®. A. Robinson, Esq., M. Irish, C. E. 1, Inspector Board of Public Works, Ireland, and Jate Super- tendng Officer of Pabic Works Depart ment, Ceylon. It is a very interesting paper, and gives a good description of the country, workmen, roads, and method of working. We notice that the gauge of the road is five feet six inches that no! only wood is used for fuel, but coal is imported from England, that the salaries of drivers and conductors range from $1000. to $1,500 a year, and that a tender for a branch line has recently been accepted for over 115,000 per mile. Game abounds, and in nearly every coffee Gistrict there is a pack of harriers or elk Juounds. Snipe may be bought for 49 ent# a dozen. The high- roads are made at a cost of $15,000 per mile, on account of the cuttings. Mr.
