A petition signed by 50,000 peoplc in Bergamo province was presented to a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church asking for proceedings to beatify Pops

toward canonization as a saint. Bishop Clemente Gaddi of Bergamo said the petition would sent promptl to the Con- gregation of Rites at the Vati- can.

The Congregation handles causes for beatification and can- onization. Beatification is the process of establishing that one may be publicly venerated by Roman Catholics in a particular area. It bestows the title of “blessed.”

It will be up to Pope Paul and the Congregation of Rites to determine whether a cause for beatification should ,be opened. Vatican sources said a petition with so many names- showing popular devotion to John—could be a strong foctor.

’l‘here is no fixed time for beatification. Pope Pius X was the last pontiff beatified and canonized. He died in 1914 and was beatified in 1951. He was canonized in 1954.
