The bill as it stands, will not disfranchise any voter in this Province, except the very poorest of the poor, while it will enfranchise thousands in Canada who have never yet possessed the privilege of voting for a representa- tive in parliament. They who say that know very little of the Indians, at least of the Six Nations; besides, as a matter of fact, every Indian is far more in- dependent of any such improper contrect than are, say the post oftice officials of this country and otker civil service employes who has voles, and who use them very frequently against the Government. As an employe of the Gevernment I might be dismissed from the servica Asan Indian, residing on my farm on the reserye, there is nothing that the cuperintendent-general could deprive me of were I to vote against the Government,

lt seems to me therefore, that there is no good reason why every Indian, who is otherwise qualified, whether resident upon a reservation or not, should not be allowed to vote, and that ig all that we ask, and I am sure the intelligent people of this Dominion will not refuse to us such rights, because somebody is afraid that in such case the great majority of the Indiaus would turn out to be conservative voters.

* Again, it is said that ia enfranchising our Indians yon also enfranchise Pound- maker and others who are now engaged in scalping our settlers in the Northwest. Surely no one will be misled by such state- ments as that any more than if it were said by giving a vote to the while you are giving a vote to Riel, who ia causing our volun- teers to be shot down.

‘* The Indians for whom we are pleading are loyal to the core, and we submit that they should not be deprived of their rights because a few Indians in the Northwest have been led by an ex-M.P. into hostile acts.

over 10c though sales in the country run up to 10}c. Common grades are slow at apy price. Liverpool quotation 58s.

Oats—Prices are firm and advancing, and the demand has been fair. No 2 white sold yesterday at 474 to 48c, as to location. No 3 white sold at 464¢ per bush. Nol white at 5le; and mixed at 46 to 47e per bush. as to quality,

Fish— The fish warket has passed through another quiet week, and prices are without much change, but the tendency is in favor of buyers. The privcipal feature is the arrival of new mackerel, which are selling in fare lots out of pickle at $2 and $2 25 _per bbl, without bbl. Old mackerel are quiet, but as they are of better quality than the new, holders are not forcing lots at any concession, and further sales of No. 3, have been made at $2 50 to $2.75 per bbl, the outside for choice rimmed. Shore No 2 are scarce and firm at $8 to $10 per bb}. Nova Scotia large No 3 are nominally $4.50 to $5 per bbi. with very little de- mand. In fact, dealers are .jndifferent about buying any kind. Cod fish are sell- ing slowly, and there is not much induce- ment to prepare stock for market,

There are many on this Island who keep the name of her father, Martin MaeQueen, l’sq., iv grateful remembrance, and all who knew him say that ho was one of the great- est and kindest gentlemen that ever lived. He gave employment to hundreds, both of Irish and Ssotch, who had good reason to fel sorry at his early death. Those who think so much of her writings, and who know how bravely she set out to work for her living, upon the loss of the fortune left by her father, will never believe that Mra. MacLeod would deserve bad treatment from anyone.

Captain Howard

li is no disparagement to our brave Cenadian cflicers and men to say that the brightest honors of the first day’s fighting at Batoche seem, by one consent, to be ac- corded to Cept. Howard. He wears the uniform of a United States captain of artillery, welare told, and has seen service on the frontier in the Indian wars of the Repnbhe. When the rebellion broke out, our Government purchased two gatling guns from the manufacturers in New Haven, Conn., and Captain Howard came with them to show the Canadians how to use them. It was inferred by the general! public that the duties of this ofticer would be con- fined to preliminary instructions of our volunteers in the use cf the gun, Fortu- nately, however, Captain Howard has gone to the front, and takes his chances on the battlefield with the true spirit of the eol- dier. His coolness and bravery at a criti- cal moment in the late battle appear to have been of priceless value. from the account published it would seem that he saved not only the Gatling but the other field guns from capture by the rebels

All Canadians wi!l join with our officers on the field to pay cheerful tribute to the gallant conduct of a brave ofticer of the United States who has entered our service. The incident may also serve to draw the two nations into closer sympathy. The most effective feature of the late Hon. Joseph Howes great speech at the Detroit trade convention of 1865 was that in which he referred to his son’s service in the fed- eral armies. The great assembly who then listened to him rose to their feet and gave “three cheers for the boy,” We propose three cheers for Captain Howard, in return of an international compliment, as well de- served now as it was twenty years ago.— Nt. Some very fat cattle, brought into the city to-day and sold to a butcher, were taken to the city scales to be weighed, and while waiting were hitched to the posts pear by. The ever vigilant Market Toll Contractor was promptly at the scene, de- manding toll, as the cattle stood within the Market place. The owners of the beasts were naturally somewhat incensed at the unexpected and unwelcome interference, and declined, in no very gentle terms, to comply with the request of the toll take ; How the dispute ended we have not learned.
