The room was hushed; in silence rose rhe King, and sought his garden cool,

An Unbeliever in Fhysiognomy.

There may be something in the assert- ed science of physiognomy, but I am an unbeliever. My own idea is that the face of a man may show his character, indeed, but that whenever it does the likeness is the result of sacquirement rather than nature. My meaning is that, when a young fellow finds that his visage is going to be somber and placid, he is apt to decide that he will be a minister ; that the possession of strik- ingly handsome features often sends a man on the theatrical stage; and the unlucky chap born to be repellantly ugly, gets discouraged, gives up trying to make a good impression and takes to roguery. Ofcourse, 1 may be al- together wrong.

Reading in the newspapers that the police had arrested all recognized pick- pockets in the crowds of the Grant funeral, I went to the central office to see the collection of rascal’s faces. There were 162. I tried to criticise them impartially. The admission must in all honesty be made that, as an en- tire assemblage, they could not have

been mistaken for delegates toa Young

Men’s Christian Association ; and yet I could count but twenty-seven who satis- fied all the demands of scoundreily ex- pressions, for only that number present- ed the typical thiet’s visage, with evil, unsteady eyes, thin, cruel mouths, and beardless cheeks and chins. I account for these by my theory that they were living upto the countenances which nature put on them. Of what earthly use (leaving heaven out of the account) would it be for one of them to live an honest life? He would be constantly compelled to disprove his face.

The majority of the prisoneis looked like nothing in particular, except that they bore evidences of drunken habits, and in many cases wore clothes too flashy for anybody save negro minstrels or avowed marauders. The indications of professional thievery were in their mauners and talk raiher than their features. A goodly minority ia the lot had faces for merchants, editors, clergymen, or any other kind of pre- sumably moral and intellectual persons. [ asked Chief Detective Byrnes about it. “The officer who would attempt to detect thieves by appearances is too much of a theorist to be of any practi- cal use,” was the reply.—N. Y. Letter.

> a Skinning Calves Alive.

We have received a circular issued by an enterprising dealer in hides, calf- skins, pelts, tallow, bones, ete., who does business at Sherbrook market. The circular is headed “how to realize the highest prizes for calfskins.” It contains 2 number of directions for skinning calves and curing calfsking. Here is the first; “Slit the skin from the brisket to the jaw, and skin down each side enough so that the throat can be cut without cutting the skin cross- wise, a8 in this way the cheek of the skin is saved, while if itis cut in the least across the throat, the head is wortbless.”’ If this precious advice is followed it involves commencing the operation of skinning the calf before killing it. After some further diree- tions, we are informed that skins so prepared will be in nice condition and worth from 5to 15 cents more than they would have been if poorly taken off and cared for.
