Mr. Crawford is a man whio, as its repre- | sentative, will reflect credit on the district ; | and any opposition will be purely factious.

The Convention passed, unanimously, a) resolution approving of Mr. Mongomery’s | appointment to the oftice of Chief Superin.

The Chief Superintendent of Edu-| cation and the ‘“ Patriot.” \

Iv is well understood that no man heaps | opprobrious} epithets upon another for the good of the conntry ; and every one feels | that the Patriot (?) does not call the Chief Superintendent of Education ‘‘a traitor” from motives of patriotism. To enter into a deferce of the Chief Superintendent’s conduct towards his late constituents is quite unnecessary—so far as the people of Belfast are concerned. But lest persons residing im distant parts of the Province, and not knowing the Chief Superintendent, should doubt fora moment that his con- duct has been strictly honorable, we may atate that before he accepted the office, Mr. Montgomery held public meetings in all the principal settlements of Belfast ; that at these meetings he announced that he had been offered the office ; and that at every meeting resolutions like the following were passed :

“Moved by Angus D, MeMillan and “seconded by William J. Emery, that Mr. **Montgomery receive the thanks of this “meeting for his actions in the House ‘of Assembly while representing this District ; and that this meeting—-though sorry to lose his services as their representative—are fully satisfied and willing that he should accept the office now offered him, viz., Superintendent ot Education.”

Carried unanimously.

A resolution similar to this was, we re- peat, carried at every meeting; and the charge of ‘‘ betraying Belfast” will recoil with double force upon the Patriot and its Party.”

Qur contemporary the Pioneer —now pub- lished at Montague—remarks :—

“It appears that Mr. Manning has been dis- missed from his office in connection, with the educational department, and that Mr. D. | Montgomery has been appointed to the vacant place. Though we do not believe in the prin ciple of making official changes whenever the reins of Government are transferred from one party to another, yet we do not think the educational interests of the Province will at all suffer by the change. Mr. Montgomery did good work when teaching in the Normal School and elsewhere, and if the change had to be made, he is, we think, as deserving and competent as any other eligible to the office.
