INTERNATIONAL YOUTH YEAR

Dear Fellow Students:

It is once again time that I remind you that I985 is Inter- national Youth Year, as designated by the United Nations.

The year has been jam-packed with events designed by and for young people across this country and all over the world. It is designed for-youth to express our concerns on the future world we stand to inherit. A broad range of concerns stand before us. Everything from our future careers to the escalation of the arms race are concerns for the youth of today.

The UPEI Student Union is playing its part in International

Youth Year by hosting several events: A UPEI Human Rights V

Conference is to he held the weekend of September 27-29. For information on this conference please contact Michael Zinck at 566-5120. Michael had done a lot of work in the past few months on this conference, which is ﬁnanced by a $1500.00 grant from the Secretary of State.

Another event in the works is the P.E.I. Youth Invitational Conference to be held here from October [7-20. This event is intended to draw on many youth in the province: and the stu- dents of UPEI are the hosts. The conference is an attempt to address the future for Island youth in relation to social, political and economic change. Much organization has already been done on this conference both by the Student Union and by representatives of other youth groups in P.E.l. The provincial Secretary of State has approved a grant of $3000.00 for the conference and has forwarded the proposal to the federal Ministry of Youth for final approval. lfyou want information on the conference. or wish to help out, please contact Gordon t'obb at 566—0398 in the Student Union office.

the Canadian Federation of Students o Services. This series‘con- sists of well-known Canadian experts speaking on future work issues and is complemented by locally-based events. The UPEI Student Union has received “800.00 to organize the series on campus. This money will be made available by the Federal Secretary of State. If you are interested or wish to offer as- sistance. please contact Carolyn Ryan at 566-0648. These events have been planned and organized for you, the students of U PEI. Please come out and use your talents in the organization of these events, cOme forth with your ideas, or at least par- ticipate in the events as they occur. University involvement can be very rewarding: for exam- ple. look at the success of Orientation. Parker Grimmer and Betty Johnston deserve thanks and praise for the suc- cess of Orientation. Parker, Betty and the rest ofthe Com- mittee put many hours into this event and their effort cer- tainly did show through. Congratulations also go to Mark Grifﬁth and Scott Fer- ris. for the time and effort they put into Shinerama. The freshmen set a new record for money raised from this event - congratulations!

I also want to welcome all new and returning bartenders, campus police. and staff to the Student Union Building. Their hours really have helped the operation run smoothly.
