To ‘Avert War'

Four Belgian Explorers Are Reported Safe

LONDON tReutersl—The crew of a Belgian plane which crashed Thursday in the Antarctic has been saved. the official Soviet news agency Tass announced to- day.

The plane was carrying four Belgians. including Prince An- toine de Ligne. son - in - law of Grand Duchess Charlotte of Lux- embourg, and Capt. Gaston de Gerlache. 39-year-old leader of the Belgian Antarctic expedition.

A Russian rescue plane equipped with skis found the crashed plane two days ago. But the occupants had already left the scene for a Belgian supply base about 80 miles away.

They left a note in the wrecked plane saying they had only enough food to last until today.

The Soviet rescue plane, piloted by Viktor Perov. had made re- peated efforts to find the Bel- gians as they trekked across the dangerous. crevasse-scarred ter- rain.

Tass said today it was Perov who had found the explorers.

Tass said the rescue plane found the men standing near a tent and took them to the Belgian King Baudouin base.

Tass. quoting reports from the Soviet Antarctic base at Mirny, gave no further details of the

rescue.
