Dr. Marcotte Elected by a Good Majority

Turee Rivers, April 8.—Mr. Tarte’s missioners have been defeated, and Dr. Marcotte is the electof Champlain by a good majority. With all the returns in except from Rat River, which gave the Conservatives a mejority of sixteen in June, and S', Maurice, which gave four of a majority to the same party, Dr. Marcotte leads by 153. This, considering the tre mendous efforts made by Mr. Tarte and his friends, is asplendid victory.

Davin Dubs the Government a Cabinet of Bandits—Instructions te Outsiders,

Orrawa, April 8.—-In the House of Commons yesterday afternoon the Govern- ment were effectively accused of giving an important intimations to the interested outsiders before parliament had been in- formed.

The evening eession was given to Cowan’s Alien Labor Bil! which 1s mostly a reprint of the one that the conservative whip, Mr. Taylor, has four times introduc- ed and supported in the last seven years, and has now before the House of Commons.

Mr. Davin was disposed to reflect on Mr. Cowan for stealing the measure from the man who did the pioneer work on it, but excused him on the ground that he was following the cabinet ot bandits who bad placed on their banner the phrase, ‘We glory in purloined policies.” Both bills go to a special committee to te amalgamated.

Hauirax, April 8.—The four-masted steamer Assaye,of the Beaver-Line was wrecked yesterday on Blood Rock, olf Seal Island. The steamer struck in a fog.

London, April 6.—The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canade took place today. Sir Charles Rivers Wilson, the chairman, presided.’ He referred to the disastrous effect of bieycles, of which, he said, 10,080 were used in Toronto alone. The chairman expressed the belief that the prospects of the Grand Trunk railway was favorable. The retiring board was re- elected.

Chicago, April 6.—The mayoralty clec- tion resulted in a deeisive victory for the democratic party, its candidate, Carter Harrison, having more votes than ail the other candidates combined.
