The machinery in the engine-room was slightly injored. The woman attending the spinning frame had just left work, The windows were torn out by the shock and the engine-room was badly wrecked. Str,—l would respectfully call the atten- tion of the City Council to the botched.up fence that is now being put around Hills borough Square. ‘The posts at the entry, in place of being round, are eight.square, far too high and not set up straight. Those posts, in place of being set across the cors ner—as they are now, should be on a con- cave line, which would enable people to enter more easily.

Any person having a mechanical eye, will see at a glance that it is a disgraceful ‘piece of workmanship.

Sir,—Many complaints have been made against the present Government of the Dominion for allowing so much jobbing amongst the officials; and as there is some grumbling at present about certain Dos minion Departments for not acting fairly, [ will venture toask you the following questions, and your answer will be looked for witha degree of interest by a good many :—

Can you tell the reason why the business of supplying the several light~houses around the Island with coal and oil is not let to tender, and not as it is done now by private bargain?

Who owns the schooner called the [ois Jane, that at present has got such fat pickings ?

Is it fair to give all the work to her by private contract,—and that, like the steel rail job, ‘‘ without the sanction of Govern- ment ?”’

AVING attended a meeting in the Athe- o#um on Friday evening last, for the pur- pose of nominating candidates for the Licensing Board, it was agreed that the three persons re- ceiving the highest number of ballots should be the choice. Messrs. Dawson, Cundall aad Blake received the nomination. The next highest on’ the list was the Hon. H. J. Calibeck. Since then Mr. Blake has declined to run. In Monday moroing’s Hxzaminer, Mr. Joseph Knight offers his services to the public without getting the consent of the meeting that nominated the can- didates, although he received but very tew bal- lots On Friday night. Since Mr. Knight has thought proper not to be bound by the decision of the meeting, it opens the way for others, and I, therefore, offer myself as a candidate for the suftrages of the people. If elected, 1 shall deavor to discharge my duty fearlessly and partially.
