New York, Nov, 14.

Fire in 4a Canon street tenement house of twelve families, early this morning, caused the death of four persons of one fam- ily by suffocation, and the father was killled by jumping from a window. A woman was also badly injured by jumping out. The firemen’s hands were badly burned rescuing minates.

GREAT BRITAIN. Lonpon, Nov. 14. On the Stock Exchange to-day Ru sian and Turkish Securities were very flat, and there was a heavy decline, owing to rumors of political eomplications. The trouble ori- ginates in Paris, where there is a panic in consequence of a rumor that the British fleet had been ordered to enter the Black Sea, which Russia will probably make a easus belli. LIVERPOOL, Nov. 14. The London correspondent of the Liver- pool Courier says: ‘* Layard, British am- bassy to Turkey, has been instructed to hold no further communications with the Porte regarding Asia Minor, but to send for the British fleet, so it may anchor in Turkish waters by Sunday or Monday. Subsequent proceedings will depend on whether the Turks proceed to the fulfil- ment of ,their plans for reform in Central Asia. Lonpon, Noy. 14. The London correspondent of the Liver- pool ‘‘ Post” says ihe Government has re- ceived information from New York, through the British Consul there, that the Ameri- can Fenians are offering money and arms to the Irish tenant farmers to enable them to resist evictions. ‘The correspondent adds: ‘The Trish Consecutive fully credits the statement that such offers are made, but does not believe anything will result there- from. Nevertheless, he will be on his guard against insurrectionary movements.” Suna, Noy. 14. A body of ‘* Safes,” numbering 1,000, who attacked the foraging party of the 67th regiment, were routed by General Me- Pherson atthe Junction of Pausher and Cabul rivers. The enemy suffered great loss. They were pursued six miles. The British loss was four killed and five wounded.

GERMANY. Berit, Nov. 14. The organic complaint from which Bis- marck is suiiering is said to be an incipient stage of fatty degeneration of the heart. There is no immediate cause for apprehen- sion.

SOUTH AFRICA. Lonpon, Noy. 14.

Advices from Cape Town announce that the Cape Ministry has addressed a-letter to Sir Bartle Frere, expressing an opinion that Garnet Wolsley’s settlement of affairs in Zululand is prejudical to the permanent peace of South Africa.

M. Waddington, the present Premier of France, is the son of an English cotton manufacturer who established himself in France. He was born in Paris in i826, and educated in England, where he gradu- ated at Cambridge. On his return te France he elected to become a French citizen. In 1871, just before the German war, he was elected to the Corps Legis- latif. Since then he has been twice elected Minister of Public Instruction, twice of Foreign Affairs, and First Plenipotentiary of France at the Congress of Berlin. There is a prejudice in France against M. Wad- dington because he is an Englishman. At last accounts it was rumored he would re- tire from the Ministry and that his suc- cessor would be M. De Freycinet, now Minister ef Public Works. This gentleman was born in 1828, is a civil engineer by profession, was manager of the Southern Railway Company of France, in 1855-62; was eiected Senator in 1875. From Decem- ber, 1877, to the present time he has been Minister of- Public Works, first under M. Dufaure, and, secondly, under M. Wad- dington. For some time it has been stated that M. Waddington has been unacceptable to the ultra-national party, on account of his opposition to plenary pardon to the Communists, coupled with the objections to his-race and faith. The trouble is that he is of too stable a political character to suit the ultra-radical party in France.

The Princess Louise, according to the London correspondent of the Teronto Globe, since her return to England speaks in the most enthusiastic terms of Canada and the Canadians. She is thought by her English friends to be exceedingly well, and will leave England for Canada again on the 22nd January.

The Newland oak is 47 feet 6 inches in girth. The Cowthorp, now more than 100 years in process of decay, has a girth of 60 feet. Botharein England. Many of the fine oaks in England are, withont doubt, from 800 to 1,000 years old. The Duke- ries in Nottinghamton present the greatest number of specimens, and Berkshire can show some remarkably fine oaks, especially the neighborhood of Windsor, and the Duke of Buccleuch’s park of Ditton, near there.

Maritime Newsparers.—There are now seventy-five newspapers published in the Maritime Provinces. Of this number New Brunswick furnishes nearly thirty, or one to every ten thousand inhabitants. West- morland County has six separate editions to about forty thousand inhabitants. — Mone- ton Times.

The Island has twelve newspapers, or about one to every eight thousand. It may be truly said that ‘‘the newspaper business is much overdone.”

A Nor torn tus-Scroot Bors.—Febru- ary, 1880 will be a very remarkable month. It will have five Sundays. This honor falls to the lot of only three years in the present century, namely, 1824, 1852, and 1880. rem these numbers, it wonld seem that there are five Sundays in February once in 28 years, but this is not the case, 1880 plus 28 is 1908, but February, 1908, will not have the five sundays, because 1900 will net be a leap year. The years will be 1920, 1948 and 1076. we wonder, could tell why it 1s 1920, and not 1908.

Bismarck, the German Premier, and one or two other European statesmen, seem to think there is a big bonanza fer Govern- ments in becoming owners of railways. Bis- marck has gone so far as to have a com- mittee of the German Parliament appoinied on the matter, which is now being discussed before the Lower House of the Prussian Diet. Belgium also proposes to settle some difficulties that have arisen from railway freight and travel, by taking possession of all the railways running through that coun- try. In 1871, there were only about 1,200 iniles of railway in all Belgium, and they were owned and managed by Government, Since then private companies have built abeut about 2,009 miles ofroad, and it ig this that it is proposed to concentrate in the hands of the Government.

Prrer’s Pence.—The receipts of Peter’s pence at the Vatican this year have been much larger than they were in 1878. From January till September the Pops dispersed for schools and educational institutions $300,000 ; in subsidiss to the poor clergy and religious works, $380,000, and in pri- vate charities, $170,006. Indeed his lav- ishness in the last mentioned department of expenditure recently caused the pontificial eoffers to run dry. When a subscription was opened for the help of the inundated districts of Spain an order was given to for- ward 20,000franes. The Almoner declared that the Papal coffers were absolutely empty and Leo XIII was about to raise a loan at a local bank when a bishop was an- nounced. He brought several’ thousand francs for Peter’s pence. This sum was immediately forwarded to Spain.

Jorn? Stock Compantzs. —There is a ten- dency in the Upper Provinces to place manufactories under the management of joint stock companies. Several companies have lately passed from private hands to the management of joint stock concerns, the late owners becoming large sharehold- ersin such companies. The advantage of running any large manufacturing business under Company management must be evi- dent. Oue reason is that the keen compe- tition of these times renders it necessary that the most improved machinery shall be used, and every eifort made to extend sales and open up new markets, local, as well as otherwise. Very few individuals are able to keep abreast with joint stock concerns in these respects ; and hence the tendency to the ehange noted.

Truro Horses ix Encianp.—The Lon- don Sporting Life of the 25th ult., in notic- ing the handicap meeting which was to take place at Alexander Park on Monday and Tuesday following, spoke of the two horses recently taken to England by Mr. J. ©.
