Our Marine and Fisheries.

The report of the Minister of Marine and Fisherivs for the year ended 30th June, 892, shows the total expenditure of the Marine branch to have been $861,434, be ng $i2 699 less than the previous year, and $29.5i7 less than the appropriation Tue whole number cf persons engaged in the Marine outside service is 1439. The expenditure for maintenance of lighthouses and ccast-service amounted to $450,155, and fur construction of lights $35,804 a de- crease of $6,238 as compared with the pre- vious year, and $14,625 less than the Par- liamentary grant. The total number of light stations, light ships and fog alarm stations in the Dominion on 30th June, 1892, was 611, and of lights shown, 730 ; the number of steam- whistles and fog-horns, 56; the number of light-keepers and engineers of fog-alarms, with masters of lightships, 624. On 3lst December, 1868, there were 198 light- stations, 227 lighthouses, 2 fog-whistles and no fog-horns; on 3lst December, 1892, there were 617 light-stations, 841 light- houses, 23 fog-whistles and 34 fog-horns.

P. E. ISLAND DIVISION, In this division (which is under the charge of Mr. Artemas Lord) there are 52 lights at 34 stations and one steam fog-horn under charge of 40 keepers. There are two automatic whistling buoys and one bell buoy. An automatic whistling buvy was moored last summer off the southern ex- tremity of Tryon shoal, in Northumberland Strait.

STEAMER STANLEY.

The Stanley began her winter trips on Ist December, 1891, and continued to ruu between Charlottetown and Pictou till 15th January, when the route was changed to Georgetown and Pictou. The Charlotte- town route was resumed on 23rd January for two days cnly. The Stanley remained on the Georgetown and Pictou route until

Very few eggs were lost. The of- ficer in charge of the hatchery says that a young lobster when hatched measures about one-quarter of an inch in length; at one year old it measures two inches, and grows at the rate of about two inches every year; so that a lobater of seven and a half or eight inches in length would be four years old. The oyster experts report the beds at Shediac, Buctouche, Cocaigne and Richi- bucto in a deplorable condition, caused by the ravages of mud-diggers. They say that che rake at present used in Canada must be discarded, as it is very destructive to cyster brood and grounds. Throughout the whole of their inspection they report as a remark. able fact that they did not find a single ma- rine enemy to the oyster. Another cause of destruction is fishing through the ice.

The total number of ciaims received in 1891 was 19,663, against 18,071 in 1890,be- ing an increase of 1,592; 1,177 were reject- ed tor informalities.
