On Friday, October 13th, The Cadre, UPEI’s student news- paper, put on a fund-raising con- cert, called Triskaidekaphobia, in order to raise funds to send mem- bers of its staff to a conference in Vancouver next January. The con- cert featured sets from 10 musical groups such as Buck 65 and Negative J. Beginning at 6:30 PM with a forty-minute set from the Rude

until the last act took the stage. The final performance of

the evening was Bucket Truck, a

Newfoundland - band that has shared the ticket with such distin- guished Canadian, bands as | Mother Earth. The band’s aggres- sive and heavy rock stylings encouraged the crowd in the upstairs portion of the Barn to begin moshing ( a form of dance that involves pushing and other violent behaviour).

“The moshing just got out of hand,” said Aaron Carr, the Panther Lounge’s operations man- ager. “People started throwing each other to the floor and jump- ing on top of each other,” he added.

As the violence of the moshing got increasingly violent, Campus Security decided to get involved. “We hate to watch that sort of thing happening,” said Fred James, a Campus Security

officer, “so we decided to join in the fun.”

Soon, close to two hundred people, concert-goers and campus security officers alike, were jump- ing up and down in unison. The jumping was so well choreo- graphed that it caused the floor beneath them to vibrate with such a force that it broke and dozens of people fell through to the Student Union offices.

Luckily, only 27 peopte were severely injured and sent to the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital. But unfortunately, because of the damage done to the Student Union offices, the Union will have to set up in the Panther Lounge portion of the Barn until repairs to the offices have been completed.

UPEI Student Union President B.J. McCarville said, “This is not awesome. I’m going to have to do all my important paperwork on a pool table for the next couple of weeks.”

The other drawback to the damage done to the Student Union offices is that it will push back the ~ construction of the Student Union building for another six months.

“We'll be lucky if we see this puppy before 2003,” said Heather Love, project co-ordina- tor for the new Student Union building.

Despite the aedaee and injuries, Triskaidekaphobia was a great success, says Cadre, editor Kent Brownell. “I’ve never had so many people buy me beer in all my life,” Brownell said. “And we. raised a lot of money too.”

I think students should take a stand, and just say no to alternative music.

I don’t want any doped up, hippy, rock musicians desecrating our fair campus. I think the Barn would be better used if it stopped hosting such sock hops as Arachnophobia, and started all-night studying parties, or Catholic church services instead.

Bands with (pardon my french) sexually explicit names like Our Libido, The Flushers, Buck 69, The Flashing Flashers, Windumb Urkel and Negative J are turning a semi-respectable univer- sity environment into Lollapalooka.

erates who don’t bathe, and I’ve heard rumors that there’s even drinking at these concerts.

Back when I went to St Dunston’s, I thought the school would turn into a brothel when the Glenn Miller Band played a dance marathon on campus. I could not believe the way the girls, who only recently were per- mitted to attend classes wearing dresses that came up to their ankles, wore make up that made them look like harlots, and danced as if they were trying to put out a fire. | thought for sure that swing music was going to be the ruin of our culture. I didn’t think music could get much more taboo than Lawerence Welk, then along came Paul Anka with his new invention of rock and roll and I knew for sure that we were all going to burn in hell.

I don’t mind cutting the rug every once in a while in the privacy of my own home and with my wife, but unmarried couples dancing in public is sickening, and unnatural. -

And I pray to God that UPEI does not get a campus radio station because a place of learning is sacred, and students should NOT have fun. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Ed Sullivan.
