the Music scene. Since the last issue, there have been some pretty exciting developments in the CHALK CIRCLE Main Event. Not only will you be entertained by this year’s CASBY winners of most promising Group, but you will get a chance to see one of Charlottetown’s most promising new groups: The Tropics.

For those of you who haven’t had a chance to give this band a listen, their lead yocalist Ritchie Bulger told me that they play 80’s style music, and the one thing on this band’s mind is ‘Party, Party, Party.”? They certainly try to live up to their name, and a tropical atmosphere pervades. Ritchie told me that people have been very good to the band; they’ve had a positive response to their music so far.

Now U.P.E.L.’s all time fa- vorite, and probably the Island’s most famous band (after Don Messer and the Islanders of course) is HAYWIRE. The band has reached new heights recently with a national tour with Kim Mitchell. Their increased exposure

has boosted sales of ‘Standing in Line’’ to the top of the charts across the country. On the local charts it ranks number 2, eclipsed by Madonna’s _ blockbuster “Poppa don’t Preach” (which is number one in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and most of Europe right now.)

Alot of Maritime bands are taking a short break these days. The WEB is enjoying great popu- larity in Halifax right now, but will be returning to native Mon- treal in the near future. Drama have taken a break from their

hectic touring schedule to enjoy a week at home in Halifax. They broke alot of new ground on their tour of Quebec. Those Newfie devils ‘Lambert and James’, have just come off of a break to hit the West Coast with a non-stop tour of dates that more than confirms their popularity, espeically on University Campuses. The boys received the ONLY standing ovation at this year’s COCA Con- ference, and Universitys across the country are getting a taste of their unique Maritime humour.

Hopefully they can find time to stop by U.P.E.I.’s FallFest cele- brations to abuse the lot of us.

Students are being asked to pay a cover charge in the Student’s Panther Lounge on Friday and Saturday nights.

The reason for this is because the music is being played by Doug MacDonald’s sound system. Stu- dents now have the advantage of being able to listen to the music that they want to hear as SOUND. WAVES will play requests at any- time during the night.

Certainly, we, as students have paid our tuition as well as our student fees so why should we need to pay to get into our Stu- dent lounge? In many universities across Canada, a two or three dollar cover charge is not unheard of and is used quite extensively (ie. Carleton’s ‘““OLIVERS’’ re- quests $2.00, Montreal’s U de M’s

“CAFE CAMPUS” asks for $3.00).

We at UPEI are fortunate as the prices being asked are more than reasonable. We have a crazy hour between 10:00 and 11:00 on both Friday and Saturday nights. These prices are much less than any other club around. The re- gular prices are also much less than what you would pay in the other clubs you may frequent.

What this all boils down to is quite simple ... What’s a mere buck when you can enjoy the

atmosphere in the lounge, know the people as most of them are your peers from school, save yourself quite a good deal of money since the prices are so reasonable.

MacDonald has shown the initiative to start something new at the Panther Lounge which should be supported by the stu- dent population. Why not? Are you not getting a little bored of the other clubs around town who overprice and make you wait in an hour line-up??
