Despite the Harper Conservatives recent decision to make a $55 million cut to the Canadian Youth Employ- ment Initiative, Alison MacLellan, third year Psych major and UPEI am- bassador to the Federal Government, is reassuring students that there will still be plenty of federal government jobs for students in the upcoming summer season.

“The website outlines the five different areas of employment, once

an option has been selected students _ simply have to fill out the application,

a process that takes just a little over an hour, applying for a government job really isn’t a time consuming process.” :

“The rate of pay with these | jobs is much higher than jobs in the service industry, the security is greater, it could lead to a career and there are many different types of government employment. A student could work for the department of veteran’s affairs or they could do biology fieldwork for Agriculture Canada. There really is a lot of op- portunities.”

Although there are plenty of government jobs available, some effort must be made in order to

attain one of the coveted positions. Self promotion on the application is a great way to catch the employer's attention.

“If students are interested than the sooner they apply the better. While if employers are interested, students will be contacted in April or May and an interview will be sched- uled. Students should study for the interview and know everything they can about that job, also the students should try their hardest to promote the skills they have, if you’re bilingual put that on your application.”
