The P.E.I.' ‘Chess - Championship took place over the Labor Day weekend at the

University of Prince Edward Island. U.P.E.I. President Meincke opened the

proceedings at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and it took until Monday evening at 7 p.m. before the dust settled. While the organizers 'hoped for a few more participants, the 22 who entered represent a proportionately larger number than other provinces.

, Clearly ahead of the pack at the end of the regulation 6 matches were Dr. Peter MacKean from Kensington and Ron Waterman from Alliston 'with 5 1/2 points each, the half point coming when they played an exiting tie with each other. Peter's high standing was easy to forecast as , although he is new to the Island, his rating of 2000+, which puts him at 69th out (of the 4200 players in

Canada, gives him an enormous 600 point margin over the members of the P.E.I. Chess Club. Ron was

an unexpected surprise as he had not been rated by the Canadian Federation of Chess, but judging by his performance at this tournament he will be close to the top of subsequent

tournaments in the Maritimes.

In a log jam for third place were Ian Galloway, Mel

Gallant, Jean-Louis Beauregard, Angello Mella and Brian Craig. The prize

for the Top Junior went to Bruce Cameron. The top under-1300 rated player was Terry Chaisson. The King's County prize went to Harvey Jordan and the Prince County prize was taken by Vince Gallant.

During the course of the year there will be other tournaments. Why not join the P.E.I. Chess Club and enjoy the competition? Instructions will also be given.
