A pespatcu from Troy, N. Y., says that on the afternoon of the 12th about half the male scholars at the Eleventh Ward School struck for shorter hours and refused to continue their studies. They demanded only one session a day and that to be from eight o’clock till noon. The boys held an open-air mass meeting, and then, procur- ing lathes and sticks, swarmed through the neighboring streets threatening violence to pupils who did not join them. The reserve from the station was sent to the scene to give whatever protection was necessary. The strikers tried to induce the boys in another school to follow their example.

Ta¥ many friends of Mrs. John McPhee, will regret to hear of her death in Boston a few days ago. Although ailing for some time past she was not considered seriously iil and her death was unexpected. Mrs. McPhee was a daughter of John Mac- donald, Esq., of St. Peter’s Lake. She was about 32 years of age, and a general fayorite with all who knew her. Her re- mains arrived at Pictou Landing yeaterday, en route to the Island for interment in the fainily plot in St. Andrew’s cemetery. The tug Frank C, Batt was engaged to bring the body to the city and left last midnight for Pictou. The steamer arrived within some few miles of that port, but owing to the ice blockade was obliged to return arriving here shortly after seven o'clock this morn- ing. The corpse will likely be brought over in the Northern Light to-day and will be interred in St. Andrew’s cemetery on Monday. To her relatives and friends we extend our sympathy.

An Ontario Tragedy.

The excitement over the Bailey tragedy at Wiarton, Ont., continues. No one has been arrested in connection with the affair, but strong suspicion has been cast upon a man by the name of John Steinoff, alias Wilson, who has mysteriously disappeared, He was among the first to arrive at the fire and his demeanour there was a very strange one. Owing to the gale blowing at the time it was useless to attempt to fight the flames. One man thought he sawa man’s arm in the firé, but Steinoff, who appeared to be very nervous, said he didn’t. On closer inspection, how- ever, the form of a human _ being was distinguished, and after mach difti- culty men succeeded in removing it, Steinoff continually remonatrating with them. He said he could see no use of taking out bodies, as they were badly burned. The body proved to be that of the hired man. Bailsy’s body was discovered a few minutes later. gSteinoff left the scene immediately after the bodies were taken from the bura- ing shanty. It is said the hired man was dead before the house was set on fire and that Bailey was burned alive. The limbs of the hired man were straight, while Bailey's body was drawn up and terribly con- torted. Steinoff exhibited considerable nervousness after the affair and suddenly depariel for pirts unknown. He told his neighbors he had seen a ghost. Steinoff’s reputation was not very good, as he is wanted on a charge of embezzlement.

Didn’t Know Their Fate.

The schooner Cecil H. Low arrived at Gloucester, Mass., from Western Banks, Sunday morning, with her colors at half- mast for the loss of four of her crew. She reports that on March 30 James McDonald, Angus McDonald, Colin Chisholm and Angus McEachern left the vessel to attend to their trawls and did not return. The story of the horrible sufferings of the men, which has already been published, was not known by Capt. McKenzie of the schooner until his arrival at Gloucester. He was overcome with grief when he heard of their sufferings and the death of the Mc- Donalds from exposure and starvation, and how the body of one had been mutilated when found by the lighthouse keeper et Louisburg, ©. B. Capt. McKenzie says the four men lost were considered the smartest of the whole crew. The two sur- vivors have not arrived home. The Low has been absent @bout three weeks. She has a fare of about 120,000 pounds of ood- fish.

Land Purchase Scheme.

Lonpon, April 16.

Mr. Gladstone propounded his [rish Land Bill to the House of Commons this evening, The House was crowded to its utmost capacity. He said the aim of the present efforts of the Government was directed towards securing contentment among the people of Ireland. The pur- chases would be made through the issue of £180,000,000 of three per cent. stock, issued at par. These new Irish consola might, with the consent of the treasury, be commuted for stock af lower denomination. If the stock could not be issued, forthwith, seript of equal value would be issued for the purpose. The State authorities acting between Peasant and Landlord, would purchase the land from the latter and put the peasant in pos- session as absolute proprietor, subject to an annual rent charge until the total of payments @qualled the purchase money.

The State would not force the small occupiers ‘go become proprietors. In dis- tricts where the population was congested, the State would have the power to decide whether expropriation of too crowded land should be compulsory.

Following Gladstone, Chamberlain read a letter which he had sent to Gladstone, tendering his resignation as a member of the Cabinet.

Parnell said that, not having had Cham- berlain’s advantage of a seat in the Cabinet, he was not prepared to express a too confi- dent opinion upon the merits and demerits of the scheme until he had seen the pre- visions of the Bill. Parnell assured Chamberlain that Davitt would not act from motives of personal spite or jealousy, but solely with regard for Ire- land’s welfare,

What seems to have been a wholesale market for inveigling young, innocent girls has come to the notice of the authorities. It seems that a number of disreputable houses have sent agents from Chicago, New York, Boston and other American cities whose duty it is to put on s respect- able appearance and ingratiate them- selves with young women whom they induce to go with them to the United States, and when there draw them into a life of infamy. The prices paid these agents are in accordance with the looks of the girl, varying from $20 to $200. This week no less than 15 were

shipped.

Montreal Floeded.

Monrreat, April 16. By the ice shove to-day, Commissioner Street was inundated and the cellars flooded. The ice piled in huge mountains along the street, and near the Custom House two-thirds of the thoroughfare is occupied.

Steamship Destroyed.

Owen Sounn, April 16. Last night the steamer Africa was burned to the water’s edge. She was valued at $20,000, and insured for $12,400. The dry dock lumber yards and adjacent property were slightly damaged.
