Two Brutal Sluggers. 139 ROUNDS FOUGHT. A desperate slugging match took place five miles east of Bruceville, Illinois, on the morning of the 18th, between Adam Patter- son, saloon keeper, end George Mulvey, miner, both from Bruceville, for a purse of ¢500. Mulvey knocked Patterson out after 189 rounds. The stakes were driven jast across the line in Kankakee county. At 5.15 o'clock about 800 persons assembled, when time was called. The men fought with five ounce hard gloves. Each man weighed about 185 pounds, but Patter- was slightly taller than his opponent. At the commencement odds were given in favor of Patterson, but after the 50th round Mulvey wa the favorite, although he got some very hard knocks. He pua- ished his opponent severely, and when the 139th round was called, Patterson was so exhausted that he could not speak, but shook his head. His sec»nd helped him up, to make him come to the scratch, but he fell to the ground. Mulvey was as fresh as in the first round. The battle lasted two and a half hours. Oo

Dr. Tatmacer’s business manager has made a proposition to a number of American newspapers to supply them with advance copies of the sermons that the .everend Doctor is to deliver in England, the sermons to be printed here on the morning after their delivery, the hint being thrown out that they may be used aa if sent as special cablegrams. The modost sum of $10 is asked of each paper that accepts the proposition. Talmags’s Brooklyn sermons are furnished to newspapers in the same way and at the same rate. Talmage is the great money catcher of Nie American pulpit, and whatever he does is done on business principles.

The Lake Superior Silver District.
The Thunder Bay Sentinel bas published amepof the new silver region rear Port Arthur, The reports from silver Mountain, Which is about forty miles west of Port Arthur, are enthusiastic, and it is said that | five-sixths of one mine has been sold for | $25,000, although no information has yet been made public that demonstrates that amount of value in all the mines yet open- ed. From all the reports we have received concerning this new mineral district i} would appear to be an attractive field fcr
prospectors and capitalists, though the Jatter class should invariably be accompanied by competent ex- perts. The parties who own the prospects thus far discovered aie
for the most part men with means wholly inadequate to develop or successfully work mines ; but, with the exaggerated confi- dence of ignorance, they are all convinced that a prospect is a mine, aad they accord- ingly put prices upon their property which are far too high for any capitalist to pay. It may be that a few bonanzas near the surface may be worked with profit ; but the present owners, or those buying at their prices, will have to go through the usual experience until the owners get educated up to the appreciation of the fact that the value of a mine is the net value of the ore actually proved by shafts and levels, and that the man who invests his mony to work a mine is the man who takes all the risk, and should have most of the chances in his favor.
