An Imporrayt Case.--The Cronin trial just closed is one of the most noted in Ameri can criminal annals. It began on August 29th, and the selection of a jury was not con- cluded till October 24rd, 945 venire men being examined. The opening speech for the State was made Octobar 24th and the case was not sent to the jury till Friday of last week.

Txarric Returxs.—The returns of traffic at Moncton station of the Intercolonial Rail- way are instructive. There were decreases in tons of freight carried in 1874-5, in 1875-6 and in 1877-8. The number of tens carried in 1878-9 was 2824, as compared with 3054 in }873-4—actually a dedrease over the whole period. Since 1878-9 tonnage of freight car. ried has increased from 2824 to 23,318, and the revenue of the station has increase three- fold, — Times,

Before Sawyer took the stand the | Solicitor-General said he desired to pub ip evidence the various drug labels and other papers in which it has been proved there! was some of the prisoner's writing. To this Mr Weldon objected in a lengthy argument. After a great deal of speech- making, the Judge said he would allow all of the labels on which some of the prison- er’s writing was proved, if the rest was ex- cluded from the gaze of the jury. Mr. Weldon’s objection to this was noted and the labels submitted. Sawyer was then sworn. When shown the addresses on the Macrae, DeSoyres and Deinstadt boxes, he said they were in a _ disguised, unnatural hand. The Deinstadt address was an attempt at backhand, but the for- ward slope was continually cropping out. The writing was all in the same hand. He described at length the similarity in many of the letters to those of McDonald's in samples identified, and was quite positive in McDonald's writing in the labels in the Barker’s memorandum books, particularly in regard to the letters S, C, E, D, H, R. O, and the figure 7. Sawyer was still on,the stand when the court adjourned for the day. } He ig being gubjecied to a rigorous cross- examinatson by Mr. Weldon. The Weekly Mail and Express to-day an- nounces an arrangement by which all sub- scriptions for that paper will be turned over to the Grant monument fund. In addition to this the paper has given $10,000 to the fund. This is the beginning of a new effort to complete the fund and erect the monu- ment before 1892.
