One Chord..., Continued

Sloan very popular in the Ca- nadian college scene has been their lyrical quirkiness. Some- times an offbeat love song and other times very personal; “Can’t Face Up” was written specifically about the Internet rumours of Sloan’s apparent breakup late last year. “Sneak- ing around in this one trick town/ you can’t face up to me/ [know yourcrowd andI’m not that proud/ at least not froin what I’ve seen” shows the bit- terness that the band shows (showed) in dealing with this event. Still, occasionally, Sloan just writes lyrics that would never seem to go to- gether which adds another di- mension in their originality. Track number 6 entitled “A Side Wins” adds, “I hold up your keys to the cramp in your style”. Definitely notthe norm in terms of a pop song. The progression that Sloan has made from their first full length album Smeared and their sophomore release Twice Removed, (which incidently was voted best Canadian al- bum of all time by a recent Chart magazine poll), is seen throughout One Chord To Another. Musically, the band has leaped into another realm from their early fuzz pedal power chord days. Chris, Patrick, Jay and Andrew all show improvement simply in their playing styles, and this does not jeopardize the energy that is put intoevery song. The mood and tone of the album, whether purposely designed or not, creates a great compila- tion of songs that force you to singalong toall of the tracks. It also has created a very radio friendly sound that should not be misinterpreted as an essence of selling out (if that is a bad thing anyway) because every

singles, are all a little left of

centre from your normal easy listening formula song.

One Chord To Another should be their most success- ful album to date; with great music, great lyrics and very hip production, Sloan’s third full length release should fi- nally thrust the band into the spotlight as one of the best Canadian bands of all time. Easily one of the greatest al- bums of the year, nobody will be disappointed with this latest trip into pop glory courtesy of Halifax’s own, Sloan.(5/5)

The Excellent Band that No One Heard

Jimmy George, a band from Ottawa, played at UPEI's Panther Lounge; unfortunately, their excellence will remain unknown to most of the uni- versity's population due to lack of attendance.

Only about fourteen people came to the barn on Thursday evening to witness the talents of Jimmy George. Despite this poor attendance, the band still put on an enter- taining show. Perhaps because of the scarce crowd the band was more personable and crea- tive in their act.

Many of the people who attended the show commented that they enjoyed the band im- mensely. Their variety of in- struments, ranging from acous-

band's response to this request , "F--- Alanis. In fact, there isno one in this band who has not f---ed her". Crudeness seems to be a required talent for the members of this band.

Why the name Jimmy George? Well, they explained that they named their band af- ter a man who used to buy them coffees in a coffee shop. That was the deep meaning of the name, which consequently defines their style.

Jimmy George was an excellent show. Too bad the majority of the student popula- tion who went out on Thursday evening chose to support the bars of Kent street rather than investigate what talent their student union hired. Is student apathy going toremainatrend? Students should take advan- tage of the bands that come to the school. Or are our expec- tations too high and nothing

less than 54-40 is worth see- ing? The Jimmy George show

is lost to the students of UPEI. It is now the excellent band that no one heard.
