Janaary 7th.—We have had our fi-st fight. The enemy numbered two hundred. The fight was het while it Jasted, We had about five hundred in all including Cona- diane, Australians aod Cornwallis. ‘The enemy lost 20 killed, 6 wounded and 41 taken prisoners. The rest ran. They are a hardelooking lo:, they carry three different kinds of rifles, bat no bayonets, no uniform, just their every day clothes and they are all holes and paiches. Our losses were two Australians killed and four wouasded. The Boera are no shote; they get behind rocks, aod they run the minute they hear the word “Charge.” They don’t like cold steel or the sight of a Brit- ish bayonet. I must now elose with love to all.
