Disappointing The Returned Men

The present Family Compact Government in their pre-election pledges and promises were all for the support and patronage of the returned soldier. It was generally hoped and expected, that Mr. Lester Douglass successor as Vendor would be chosen from the Legion, of whom several had made application. But those with such anticipa- tion were reckoning without their host. A deal has just been engineered that not only scorns the Legion, but brings more grist to another Family Compact. Without raising any more noise than when Mr, Douglas was first slated as Mr. Sin- clair's prospective successor, Mr. Harry.Bonnell, whose wife is the competent and successful host- est of the Strathcona Hotel where members of the Government and Legislature board, and who himself is bursar at Falconwood, has had the of- fice of Vendor conferred upon him. It no doubt will be much more convenient for Mr. Bonnell to assist in running the hotel as vendor, than as hursar. But the pity of itl To him that hath machine pull shall be given, while those who of- fered their lives and rendered priceless service for King and country must go empty away. How long is this sort of machine administration to be tolerated?

That Balanced Budget

At the last legislative session Premier Camp- bell budgeted for a. deficit of $63,288 on current account for 1937, but he explained that the prospects were really much more hopeful, “We could easily adopt a more optimistic attitude, and say that we are going to balance our budget this very year," he said, “but we have preferred to do as we did in 1936, lace the facts fairly and squarely before the gislature and, if possible, achieve a better showing at the end of the year than we undertake to do at the present session.”
