PLUCKY PEDRO. A Costa Rica Cowboy's Death Stroke to a Vicious Jaguar.
A wounded and maddened jaguar isa dangerous enemy, but a Costa Kica cow- boy unilinchingly faced one not long age, and Forest and Stream describes the en- counter. A large catile ranch had lost several calves and young mules, and the cow boys reported that they bad seen a big jaguar sneaking away from a dead calf. The manager, thereiore, offered go to any man who would kill the beast. This is a large sum to a Costa Rica cowboy, und all the old muzzle londers on the ranch were immediately loaded to the nozzle.
One morning, soon after the manager's offer, a day old calf was found with its skull crushed in. The meat had not been touched, and, believing that the big cat would come back that night for his kill, a hunt was arranged, every one going, in- cluding the dogs, and a start was made late in the afternoon.
A short ride brought the hunters to the spot where the calf had been that morn- ing, but the carcass was not there. It had been dragged a little way off toa clump of bushes. The scent was redhot, and all the dogs were off at once, one old hound in particular baying at every jump. The cowboys and the other men _ tollowed closely.
Suddenly the barking of the dogs broke out lodder than ever. They had the jaguar treed, and when the manager reached the tree the old hound lay dying from a blow of those terrible claws. ‘The jaguar was
ging a limb, showing only his litsle ugly head.
The men blazed away with their old muzzle loaders, but the cat was so high and the buckshot scattered so badly, that the fusillade bad little eflect, except to make the cat change its position. As it sprung for a bigher limb, the manager raised his winchester and fired.
The result was sturtling. Down came the jaguar, striking the ground like a bag of salt. The ball had cut the spine, so that the hind legs of the animal were paralyzed.
It struck the ground about eight feet from where the youngest cowboy, Pedro, stood. The boy had no gun, but like a flash his mmachete was out and he sprang at the beast. The jaguar, with open mouth, made a vicious grab at his leg, but the boy ran his machete down the brute’s throat with all the strength that was in him, and when Le drew it out the jaguar was cead.
Pedro got his $25 and something else that money could not buy—the respect of the whole ranch.

Heredity of Heterogeneous Populations. The extreme fluidity of our heterogene- ous population is impressed upon us by every phenomenon of social lite here in America. We imagine the people of Eu- rope, on the other hand, after scores of generations of stable habitation to have settled themselves permanently and con- tentedly into place. This is an entirely er- roneous assumption. As a matter of fact they are almost as mobile as our own American types. There are two ways in whieh demographic crystallization may have taken place—a people may have be- come rigid horizontally, divided into castes or social strata, or it may be geo- graphically segregated into localized com- munities, varying in size all the way from the isolated hamlet to the highly individ- ualized nation. Soth of these forms of crystallization are breaking down today under the pressure of wodern industrial- ism and democracy in Europe as well as in America. Nor is it true that the recency of our American social life has made the phenomena of change more marked here thay, abroad. In fact, with the relics of the ald regime on every hand the present tendencies in Europe are the more star- tling of the two by reason of the immedi- ate contrast.—Professar William Z.
