THE OLD TIMES
Sir George Gordon of Methlick (1637-1720) studied the law in
EXiinburgh so brilliantly that he helped and sometimes took the place of his professor at the Uni- versity. He got much wealth by his practice at the bar. Later, in the terrible times of religious persecution, he became Chancel- lor of Scot and and the first Earl } of Aberdeen. But when King Charles the Second wanted to make. husbands responsible for the religious opinions of their Wives and daughters, and land lords for those of their tenants, Aberdeen’s pratcical sense as well as his conscience made him refuse to obey his King and re sign his- great office.

He had been brought up as a loyal Hanoverian and his whole interest was centered in manag- ing his huge patrimony for the benefit _of himself, and rather a long way in the background, the family. THE PREMIER, EARL
Twice the eyes of his country and of ali Europe and America were upon George Gordon, fourth Earl.of Aberdeen. First, at the beginning of his career, when, as British envoy, he was given the task of arranging the terms on which the Great Powers, jealous as ever of their claims, would consent to unite against the com- mon enemy, Napoleon. It was a mission that would have tried the capacity of a veteran ambassa- dor and that Aberdeen, not yet thirty years of age, should have had some measure of success, is remarkable.
Once more, at the end of his life, in age and disillusion, it fell to him as Prime Minister to make the decision which brought Great Britain into the Crimean War. He has been blamed. War, say many, could have been avoided — Lord Aberdeen thought it inevifable and on one who knew the man could fail to realize what it cost him,'to sign the final order. He alone of all his cabinet had seen war at close quarters an in its most dread- ful from, the consequences to civilians. He never forgot wat he had seen after Napoleon's de- feat at Leipzig.
HADDO REVISITED The fourth Earl's first visit to | Haddo House since childhood was in 1805, when he returned as a young man of 21 to take up his birthright. He was shocked by the gaunt, neglected, building and the treeless waste w hich sur- rounded it. The interior of: the house, he wrote, was ‘of appall- ing badness.’ At or. e he set him- self to- restore the house, to drain the peat moss which came almost to the doors and to plant trees. The ordered beauty of Haddo, as you see it today, is largely his work. More and more the summer visits to his home, -which were all that his political career allowed him, became an absorbing interest and pleasure. He improved the estates, built farm houses of granite to replace extremely primitive ones and was on the best of terms with his tenants. :
