In the course of his sermon, yesterday, the Rev. Mr. Kirby, of the Second Method- ist Church, entered a strong plea for more religion in the politics and public business of the country. In this connection he quoted from an Alabama telegram the following concerning the opening of a court at St. Stephen’s in that State:

* A novelty was sprung on the courts well as the crowded court room of citi- zens by a motion made by Col. Samuel B. Brown that the court be opened each day by reading a chapter from the Bible and prayer. Judge Anderson granted the motion, _ stating that le thought — it a very appropriate service. Col. Browne Volunteered to read the first chapter,which he did, choosing,the first chapter of St. Peter. After the read- ing, Solicitor Stewart Brooks was request- el to lead the prayer, and responded in an able petition imploring Divine direction forthe court, apd that justice might be done and the country benefi:ed by the ser - sion, closing with an earnest appeal for Divine blessings upon all present. The assembly room paid respectful attention to this novel feature of the court standing during prayer.’,

The Gevernment vould be then responsible for his murder by offering and paying the money which ensnred his death.

His judgment is warped, his honest doubt is stolen from the accused and sold for five dollars to the League,a conviction fullowe, whieh is nothing more yor less than a legal theft and a legal crime. Thie is bad enough, but the League’s contemptible offer goes still further, for it prac- tically is made to that class to be found in Charlottetown and who are capable of anything; who will go into a store, purchaea drink absolutely temyerate, and then delilerately perjure hw elf in court, and swear that it was in- toxicating in order to get an ea:y five dollars. Is there not a faint suspicion on the minds of many citizens, that this has a'ready occurred, and if £0, was it not the League’s five dollars that purchased the perjury and procured the false conviction ? It is a legal precept that better let ninety- vine guilty go free than convict one who is innocent. But according to the League, innocent and guilty must suffer alike.

This ofter is not made in the interest cf temperance—nor is in fact anything else that the League has done —and is disguating too many temperance citizens. Magistrates trying Scott Act cases shou'd make every effort to find out whether evi- dence offered is real or purchased, and if purchased, it should be d'ssarded; and I would further suggest that the Attorney General should investigate this purchase of evidence as possibly indictable under the

New Criminal Code.

INCREASING DEBT AND TAXES

. Important Measures in New Brunswick ' Frepericton, March 16.

Three important bills were introduced in the Legislature of this Province on Satur- day—one providing for a loan of four hun dred thousand dollars for public improve- ments and another providing for a gran of $7,500 a year for seven years towards the establishment of cold s'orage at Sr. John and other points. The third relates to the iquor business, Tne Provincial Government is to take charge of the traf- fic. Retail licenses are now issued at $150 Rut the new bill increases them to $300. Wholesale licenses, which are now $300, will be €560, and the hotel licenses, of which there are many, are to be $400 each.
