The Intelligencer with great propriety calls this the Great Treaty: If the hopes of those persons who pro-

ose a ship canal between the Oceans shall ever be

made rea, this Treaty will prove the medium of secur- ing the most remarkable water communication in the world. Such a communication, it is true, whenever made would effect first, a commercial revulsion, sudden enough to be hazardous, for it would bring about the change forever of those commercial arrangements which have now been sanctioned and followed for centuries. But as it would shorten the communications on some o/ the world’s greatest lines of travel, it would be an en- terprise well worthy of the civilization of the time:— and the commercial enterprise, which is the most re- markable feature of that civilization.

If the great work proposed, of a ship canal, is ever to oe acccomplished in our time, it will be by the means and protection afforded by this treaty. However that may prove, the treaty is stillto be regarded “a great treaty,” for the diguified and impartial way in which it puts anend toapetty controversy between the two

[HE ARTIFICIAL SLATE is the product of a mix- ture of mineral substances known to be the best non- conductors of heat a3 well as the mest indestructible: the Chemical affinity of which, converts the surfaces of materials covered into a Coating of Actual Slate— Proof, against Fine and Water. Thus the jaws of nature are made to accomplish results, as surprising as they are useful, by rendering wooden fabricks as durable as Brick or Stone, and less impervious to moisture, and consequently preventing decay and destruction from corroding influences hitherto supposed unattainable. The principal ingredients are Alumina, Silica and the Oxides of fron. ‘The adhesive qualityfof the latter, not only binds but attracks the particles together, but the substance covered also. The longer exposed to the weather the more powerful the attraction, and conse- quently the harder the Slate. As various shades of co-

lour are obtained, Brick Buildings may be made imper- vious to moisture and the fashionable colours of either Free Stone or Granile. The oil must be evaporated by the action of the weather before it is Fire proof, which will take from nine to twelve months.

The Metatuic PAINTS, Purple and Red, are offer- ed as Weather and Water proof solely. Their base bein fron, secures them from Galvanic action, so fatal to lea and other Paints on lron work—and their chemical com- bination makes it impossible that any change should take place from atmospheric influence or the action of Salt Water and Sulphurated hydrogen, so prevalent in Sea Ports and tidal Harbours. They surpass all Paints yet discovered in Cheapness and Durability, which render them preeminently adapted to the covering of al] kinds of Ironwork, such as Shipping, Mills, Bridges, Steam Machinery, Railway Cars, and Iron Railing. The Metallic Paints have been analysed by Professor Hays, of Buston.

The following is an extract from his certificate :—

“ As @ permanent pigment, this mineral must rank with the most indestructable and unchangeable bases.

For covering Metallic Ware, its composition shews that it is eminently fitted.

“Signed, “ AUGT. A. HAYS, State Assayer.”

Directions.—Artificial Slate: Mix the powder with pure Boiled Linsed i] and a little Spirits of Turpen- tine, to the consistency of very thick Paint, and apyly- ing with a common Brush, being careful to keep the mixture well stirred while putting iton. One pound will cover ten square feet with two coats.

The Metallic Paints are mixed and put on like an

ordinary Paint. JOHN ROSS, Patentee.

The above new and really valuable Compounds will on trial, be found to sustain the characters given of them; large sales of each have been, and are being made, in the United States of America, as also in New Brunswick where paints are extensively used for coat- ing Ships generally; and are acknowledged as being particularly well adapted to covering the bottoms of
