—The unfortunate Rossian Jews have, it appeara, been subjected to a fresh hurdship (Thousands of them, to escape persecution in Russia, endeavonred to pass through Germany on their way to more liberal countries. Bat there has been issued an imperi+! decree from the German kaiser prohibiing all Ruseian Jews from crossing the German frontier. This decree cannot reach these miserable fugitives until they come in contact with the German authorities. Then they will be turned back destitute. Instances have heen reported where they have been shot down like dogs for attempting to make their way across the borders in spite uf the German edict. Truly, here is a case of the devil and the deep sea The ancient persecutions of the Jews seem to be reviving in this year of our Lord 1892. We dvn’t pull out their teeth, nor cut off their noses, but driving them to poverty and push- ing them to a cheerless exile is not much better,
—Oanadian butter is ‘looking up” in the British market, owing to the Canadian Government's vigorous efforts, through Prof. R»bertson, to establish the dairy sys- tem. Says the Glasgow Bailie of April 13 :
*‘Mesars. Clement & Son, of this city, who have also branches in London, Manchester and Newcastle, have just received a first shipment of 10,000 lbs. of winter made cream- ery butter from Canada. Up till recently butter-making was regarded as an outside ac- complishment by the Canadian farmer. He took it at odd moments, and, it the truth must be told, the butter bore distinct evidence to the haphazard system in which it had been manufactored. Twelve months ago, however, the Government at Ottawa resolved that the industry should be put on a different and bet- ter footing. Experimental dairy stations were estabiished in the several provinces so as to assist in the development of winter dairying; co-operative creameries were start- ed, and other steps were taken so that Cana- dian butter might by-and-bye take a position in the British and other markets similar to that occupied by Canadian cheese. Hearty support had been given to the movement by the farmers in the Dominion, and new, at the

We are sorry, how- ever, to see it stated in one Quebec de- spatch that it is rumored there that ‘‘if there should appear to be any reason to in- dicate that a jury could sot be had in Quebec to do justice in the matter of the accusations against Mr. Mercier, an appli- cation will be made for a change of venue, in which case it is even possible that the trial may be removed from the Province of Quebee altogether.” The change of venue in any case would be to be deprecated as a serivus imputavon upon the citizens of the capital city of the Province. But the mere rumor that the trial might take place out vf the Province is one which should be promp ly contradicted and repudiated by the authorities concerned. Such a thing would b2 an inconceivable insult to the Province and an outrage upon the rights of the accused. The idea that the people who have just condemned the deposed Premier 30 emphatically at the poils could not be trusted to dotheir duty in the mat‘er of giving him a fair trial and a just verdict is little less shan absurd.
Most people suppose thit the manufacture ot tobacco consists merely of taking the leaf and pressing and pressing it into plugs. The fact is, however, that the process is a very delicate one, and the least false step will injure the flavor. The leaf must be carefully attended to for months after it leaves the planter’s hand. It must neither dry too quickly or too slowly. Even after it has reached the factory the utmost delicacy of manipulation is required. The weather must be carefully studied, for if there is too much moisture in the air when it is pressed it will mould, and the same will happen if too much moisture is sprinkled upon it ioe the purpose of opening the leaf. Again, if it is over- dried in the oven it will turn crisp, and will nip the tongue in smoking. It is by careful atrention to all these points that the ‘‘Myrtle Navy” has been brought to such perfection

On Tue Move.—A gang of burglars and fire bugs appear to be travelling through parts of Nova Scotia. A few nights ago an efort was made to burglarize the Western Counties rail- way atation at Yarmouth. The would-be burglar fired three shots at the night watch - man and then escaped in the darkness,
Against THE Criry.—Among the cases decided on Mondsy by the Supreme Court of Canada, was that of Mr. James J. Chris- tie vs. the city of St. John. This action was originally brought against the city of Portland (before the union of the cities), and was instituted by Mr. Christie to re- cover damages for injuries sustained by him in falling through a rotten plank on the Strait Shore road in the year 1887. The case was twice tried at the St. John circuit, and at the first trial Mr. Christie obtained a verdict for $700. The city ap. pealed for a new trial, which was granted. At the second trial the plaintiff obtained a verdict for $1500. The city then appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, which dismissed the appeal.

R. train on Saturday evening on its way from Annapolis to Yarmouth, by three Iadian boys, aged respectively, seven, nine and thir- teen, near Brazil Lake. They had lashed to the track a pile of stones, a sleeper and a fence pole. These were seen by one of the train hands in time to prevent a catastrophe. The boys from the way in which they lingered near the spot were suspected, and upon being arrested admitted their guilt. The boys were lodged in jail.
