Move back and forth beyond the harbor’s mouth,

their ever moving, mingling, meeting lights, ao slew,

So softly colored, seem, while thus they come and £0,

Like fairy scenes of storied ages,

That brighten childhood’s happy pages.—

The twilight deepens, and the bight comes on,

Annexation of New Guinea.

AUSTRALIA BOUND To HOLD ON TO THE NEW TERRITORY.

The Melbourne correspondent of the Dundee Advertiser writes :—The annex- ation of New Guineaisnow regarded in Australia as un fait accompli, and whatever the British Government may do in the matter you may depend upon it the Australian colonies will not now let New Guinea slip from their grasp, That they should pay largely to towards the cost of settlement and goverpment, and thus relieve the pocket of the home taxpayer is. I think, universally admit- ted. But whateverits retention may cost, there is bat one opinion through- out Australasia as to the absolute neces« sity for preventing New Guinea falling into the hands of any foreign power. In a previous ietter I alluded to its great fruitfulness, and algo toits strategic importance as providing facilities tor naval sfatioss commanding the Aus~ tralian seaboard. In Melbourne a Col- onization Company is already being formed, while Mr, Ernest Morrison,son of the Principal ot Geelong College, has set off alone on a walking tour over the Island, This gentleman recently tra- versed op foot the whole length of the Australia, from Carpentaria to Mel- bourne, and is well qualified 10 carry out the task he has undertaken, The size of New Guinea compared with Borneo and Madagascar—the other large islands south of the line—is as follows —

New Guinea, 303,150 square miles.

Borneo, 284.230 ts Madagascar, 228,340 "

New Sonth Wales is as nearly as may be of the same extent (309,175 square miles) as New Guinea, while the latter is three times the size of all the Islande of New nage ee put together, and three and a half times as large as Victoria. The New Hebrides have recently had more attention bestowed upon them in consequence of the New Guinea pro- ceedings, and the several Australasian colonies have resolved to press on the Secretary of State for the Colonies the desirability of annexing these compara- tively small islands, where missionary labours have paved the way for the in- trodustion of British rule, which is warmly desired by the natives. There is no doubt that the establishment ot trading ports on the New Guinea coast will be carried out, and that an influx of white adventurers will speedily take place. In the interests of whites as well as of blacks, it is to be hoped that the steps requisite to make New Guinea a Crown Colony will be taken without deley.

A lady has raised an aetion in Glas- gow against the owners of the ship Daphne. She claims £1,000 as damages forthe lossof her husband, who was drowned when working on board the Daphne.
