threshold to annexation,” nor whould they hesitate in the choice suggested by the New York Sun, which says: ‘* There is no middle place for Canada. For us she must be either incorporated with our union or be deemed a foreign country. It is for Canadians to say whether they choose to be treated as brothers or as strangers.

—The Pilot Mound Sentinel, in speaking of the changes in the price of certain articles during the past few years, says: “So far 1 ae facts are concerned, it does uot seem

that protection has proved’ very disastrous, fora very great reduction in the cost of those things indispensable to a farming community has taken place within the last few years; for instance in 1881 the price of a binder was $310, now a much better and more improved implement can be had for $160. In 1888 a mower cost $105, and now a better machine can be purchased for $60. Rakes similar to those that a few years ago cost $35 are now sold at $25 and all othe implements are dispos- ed of at an equal reduction. Fencing wire that a few years ago cost 10 or 12 cents a pound can now be obtained at 6$ cents. Nails sell at about half of what they cost per pound a year ago.” Here is another proof from another part of Canada that the statements of the Opposition press about ‘* high prices,” and ‘‘monopoly” and down- trodden prices under the N. P., are untrue.

—The returns of the imports jute Great Britain for the eight months ended 31st August of Canadian goods, and the exports to Canada for the same period, show that while the latter are decreasing the former continue to show a most satisfactory in- crease. The exports for the eight months amouhted io £3,395,569, a decrease of £468,243 from same period last year, which may be taken as an evidence that the National Policy is fulfilling its purpose, and causing the production in* Canada of manufactured goods at _ sufficiently low prices to take the place of other countries. The imports from Canada for the eight months amounted to £4,493,- 245, an increase of £462,989 over the same period last year. The increases were: in animals, £362,270; articles of food, £326,- 185 (of which cheese shows £186,912, and fish £151,160), and metals, £5,023. In hewn and sawn wood there is a decrease of £100,490. The trade in cattle is increasing most satisfactorily, and for the eight months amounted to £1,019,983, showing the ad- vantages which Canada possesses in not being compelled to slaughter animals at the port of entry, as is the case with American cattle.

Tue NeEwrounpLanD Bair Act.—A_ St John’s, Nfid., despatch says: ‘It has been semi-officially stated that the Newfoundland Bait Act will be repealed. The past season it has been the cause of great disadvantage to American fishermen a to Newfoundland baitehandlers. The modification allowing French vessels to enter the ports for bait sup- plies proved a failure, the French refusing to come under the $1 per ton license fee, 30 ves- sels only out of a fleet of 450 having entered our port for bait supplies. The French fish- ermen have discovered that they can procure bait outside the southern coast of Newfound- land. The Bait Act this season has cost the eolony $140,000, and the government collected from all fishing vessels only $60,000, showing a direct loss to the country of $80,000. Pre- mier Whiteway has promised a repeal of the act. The Newfoundland fishermen have pro- posed a season license of $1.50 per ton.”

DIPHTHERIA IN Nova Sootia.—For the first week in the present month ten new cases @ Diphtheria were reported in Halifax. For the second week thirty cases were reported. For the third week thirty-four cases were reported. A number of cases were certainly not reported. During the same period of three weeks there have been thirty-one deaths from this dread disease. Diphtheria, of a malignant type, has appeared in Windsor; and in view of the possibility of its spreading, the 7'ridune urges every one ‘‘to look after all drains or cess pocls, heaps of rubbish, or anything that could engender the disease, and to use liberally chloride of lime or other disinfectants.”

A Washington despatch says the action of the United States government in adopt- ing nickel steel for armored battle ships will result in the expenditure of probably a million dollars in Canada within a short time for the purchase of that metal.

The fast steamer City of Monticello le«ves St. John every morning ex- cept Wednesday at 7.30, reaching Annapolis at 12, She is luxuriously furniehed, —¢ the otiicers are courteous and attentive. The ride through the valley at this season is simply delightful. On either side of the track the orchard trees laden with golden fruit, and in the rear the towering hills together form a charming picture. Trains arrive at Halifax at 7 p. m, Those who wish to ~— can spend a pleasant day about Grand Pre, and the home of Evangeline.

Sin,—Islanders here are pleased to note your course as taken anent the McKinley Bill and its probable effects when put in force. It is now generally conceded that Canada’s volume of trade cannot be tly injured by any speculative legislation, though such should have its origin on Staten Island and birth at Washington, where the tariff and trade question seems to absorb great and special attention by both parties. There are certainly party politics in view at present in the United States as well as in Canada, hence the excitement on this head.

The Central Exhibition held here this week has been a great success, the weather being favorable, and the entries and visit- ors in excess of former years. On Wednes- day 23,000 visited the grounds. The stock was of the very best quality and kinds. Manitoba and the Northwest Territories occupied a prominent place among the grains and vegetables,—providing a piece of excellent bread from Keewatin wheat to all who choose to eat gratis, On Thursday and Friday all the prize stock is paraded around the track so that all may see them moving. The procession is a very long one, and a most interesting one, composed of draft horses, teams in wagons, . and in harness only, next carriage horses in ey 9 at, the, cipagant breeds of

ornea cattle and s nies, etc., closing where the first cc maakiz the circle complete around the course, with as many as five to eight abreast among the quieter animals, The many of horned cattle and the quality shown was a grand sight, and certainly an evidence of Canada’s great agricultural wealth and pro- greas over the past. I could wish to have seen a sample of the latter articles exhibited, to- gether with some of Bulman’s black oats, and the carriage and draft fillies and year- lings. I would say that none —— those owned now by Messrs. Philip Hughes and William McGrath, of Millcove, P. E. I., on which the writer's eyes were permit- ted to feast, during the summer, in happy wonder.
