Mr. A. F. Tomutns, Clerk of the Stipen- diary Magistrate’s Court, has been awarded $100 by the City Council, for his services as Clerk of the Licensing Board for the year 1878.

Tae promptitude of His Worship the Mayor in making provision for the even tuality of an attack of small-pox is highly commendable. The readiness with which the Minister of Agricultmre acceded to the Mayor's request, is also worthy of notice.

Is Sprinc Nign?—A resident of the Roy- alty this (cold) morniag witnessed a singular phenomenon while at his stables. He heard the merry notes of arobin while inside, and, on going out, was astonished to see a lively little red breast perched upon a tree chaunting his morning hymn. Where did it come from ?

There seems good reason to believe that the eulture of the sugar beet will be tried presently in all the chief farming sections of the Prov- ince. Prince Edward Island is going into it extensively this year, and Dartmouth should set off a large area in order to afford material for the sugar refinery. We shall keep our agricultural ee as to what is being developed in regard to this in lustry.—/Hz. Herald.

RusNaway.—Quite an excitement was caused by a runaway horse attached to a sleigh this morning. ‘The scene was on the Hillsborough ice fron the Gas House to Ferry Wharf, at which poiut the horse broke through, but was assisted out by an individual who did not

ess sufficient sense to hold on to the an- imal until the owner, who was running at full speed, arrived. Letting go, the now infuriat- ed beast rushed across the river to Kelly’s Cove, and disappeared; and for aught we know, is still on the run.

Tue charge of fraud preferred by Felix Rush against John Treanor of DeSable was ‘tried before Theoph. DesBrisay, Esq., to- day. Rush testitied that in November last he purchased a pig from a man answering to the description, aud whu, according to the best of his knowledge, was Treanor ; that he fraudulently charged him $3.24 in excess of the real price of the pig; that the pig was the larger of two which were in the wagon ; that the wagon was a blue express wagon, and that the man had potatoes in it along with the pigs. Treanor produced witnesses, and clearly proved that he had but one pig to town the day which Rush says he bonght the pork : tnat he hal oats in the wagon; that it was a rough, un- painted truck wagon, and that he sold the pig to Owen Connolly & Co. He was therefore honorably acquitted.

Education.

Our schools turn out young men and women by the score, all of whom have what is called ‘‘a good education.” But the trouble is they do not know how to apply it. As soon as a yuung man leaves school and has acquired a thorough knowledge of the different branches taught, he begins to think of the profession he shall pursue— whether law, medicine or divinity-—when, in fact, he is not fit for either. That is the reason why the country is filled with quacks in all of the professions. They mistook their calling, and went so far astray in their choice that, unable to provide for them- selves, they, at last, go back to their parents fit for nothing at all. Had such youths been properly taught in school, and shown how to apply their knowledge, they would have been useful members of the community, if not in the several profes- sional, in some mechanical pursuit.

It is a crying shame that so many of our young men are indisposed to learn a trade, or to stick to the farm. False education has taught them to believe that it is dis- honorable to be a mechanic or a_ farmer, or, at least, that it is not high-toned ' What consummate folly! A thorough mechanic is as far above a bungling lawyer, a quack doctor, or illiterate preacher, as the eminent statesmen is above the brawling, pot-house politician. There is many a poor, strug- gling man who, had he applied his educa- tion to the development of his mechanical genius, instead of to the mastery of profes- sional subtleties, would have attained to eminence among his fellow-men. The youth of this country have been put ypon_ the wrong track. They have been permitted to’love too much that bastard aristocracy which invites poverty and disgrace; and the sooner our schools of learning instruct pupils how to apply the education they are acquiring, and disabuse the mind as to the character of mechanical and farming pur- suits, the sooner will it be corrected.

The first caucus of the Ministerial Party was held this morning... ‘The assemblage was a large and enthusiastic one, and every- thing passed off in the most satisfactory manner. Mr. Wallace, of South Norfolk, acted as Chairman. Messrs. Daly, of Halifax ; Caron, of Que- bec; Rufus Stephenson, of Kent, and Col. Williams, of East Durham, were elected Government whips. The meeting was a sort of ** congratulationaffair,” and speeches were delivered by Sir John Macdonald, Hons. Dr. Tupper, Masson, Bowell, Baby, and prominent men of the ranks. Mr. Brecken, of VP. E. 1., spoke this afternoon, and created a fine impression in the House.

Reported tiat Lord Napier will Head the Zulu Expedition.

Lonpon, Feb. 17.

Later telegrams from Maderia give news that at nine o'clock, on the morning of the 27th January Lord Chelmferd was at Maritzburg, on a conference with Sir Bartle Frere. All was quite at the front, and the firing was much caliner. The Zulus were repulsed from the fort on the lower Tugel.

The report that Chelmsford had retired upon Helpmakar was unfounded.

The Times says a brigade of Allanns will be dispatched frem India to reinforce Chelmsford. The 57th foot leave Columba to-morrow and may be expected at Port d’‘Urban, Natal, on March 10.

The Zimes’ says that it is rumored that Lord Napier, of Magdala, who arrived in London yesterday, has been appointed to the command of the Zulus expedition.

Remedy for Small-Pox.

(From the Patriot.)

We have been requested again to give in- sertion to the following which appeared in our columns some time ago, and we have no doubt that in this present perilous time, when this fearful scourge is producing such disastrous effects in the Western parts of the Island, it will command the careful at- tention of the public. The gentleman who, on a previous occasion, and at this time, handed us the extract for publication, de- sired us to ask other journals to copy the simple prescription :—

Edward Hine, a correspondent of the Liverpool Mercury, in a communication to that paper, speaks as follows :—

“T am willing to risk my reputation as a public man if the worst case of small-pox cannot-be cured in three days, simply by Cream of Tartar.”

This is a sure and never failing remedy:

‘¢ One ounce of cream of-tartar dissolved ina pint of boiling water, to be drank when cold at short intervals. It can be be taken at any time, and is a~ preventive as well as a curative. It is known to have cured in a hundred thousand cases without a failure. I have myself restored hundreds by this means. It never leaves a mark, never causes blindess, and always prevents tedious lingering. If the people would only try it, and report all the cures to you, you would require toemploy many columns, if you gave them publicity.”
