This should, he thought, be explained. The estimates for roads and bridges are also short of last year’s esti- mate, notwithstanding the fact that greater repairs and improvements are necessary. Aiter eulogizing the Legisiative Council for us watchfulness in looking after the rights of the people, by throwing out the Subway bill and the amendment to the Education Act, he proceeded to discuss the course which should be pursued in view of the large Provincial debt, claiming that the salaries of the heads of departments and of members of the House should be cut down. He said the Opposition would faver such a proceeding. He was also of opinion that something should be done about keeping the wharves in repair until such time as the Dominion Government should take them over. After some further remarks concerning what he considered the reckless statements of the Government he resumed his seat,

Srrk,—It is a notorious fact that our game laws are the most lame and arbitrary that a legislature could conceive. We have only a very few Island birds, and they should be protected. We have been bungling about the matter long enough. Some time ago Mr. Bain, North River, delivered a lec- ture brimful of interesting facts in regard to our Island birds. It is to be hoped that sufficient imterest has been awakened amvcng our public men to induce them to take action in this matter.

It is well known that every fall ‘* pot hunters ” thike deadly havec among .the few remainine flocks of pariridges; and it is desirable that this interesting and tooth- some bird should have better protection. We know one or two private gentlemen who have shown some interest in this mat- ter, and beyond their expectations have ,B8ucceeded im raising chickens cf great beauty and plumpness. ‘Those on the Island now ate evidently a cross of the mor-fowl ; and possibly we could have them farther crossed by the Langshans or

that Mr. Davies had been paid too much for his work.. He (Mr. Yeo) did not know how much the delegation to London would cost, but he, however, had seen it stated inthe blue books that $1,599 had been paid on account. The estimates for roads and bridges and education, were not honest, imasmuch as they were less than those of last year, and nut sufficient for the purposes for which they were voted. He had noticed also that there was nothing in the estimates fora Jubilee celebration, but he thought, perhaps, the leader of the Government intended bringing down sup- plementary estimates. The Government took great credit for keeping the financial position of the Province in such good con- dition. But what are the facts / After being nine years in power and getting windfalls froin Ottawa and keeping on the Assess- ment Act we find the Province nearly $200,000 in debt. This state of affairs, so far as he could see, did not show Management er economy. He could novi yive credit to the Government for economy, and thought they were not entitled to sup- port because they had deceived the people.
