LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

I was appalled to read the article on the front page of the Panther Prints (October, 1996), regarding the student building fund on campus. It amazes me that students can be so selfish and short-sighted as to ask for their $20.00 back from this building fund, while they would gladly spend this much a Myron's on a Friday night. This is NOT a large amount of money - it works out to only 25 cents a day - that's a lot less than the coffee you buy every morning!

The benefits we all get from this building fund are obvious. Improvements to the buildings, new buildings on campus, and future buildings, not to mention new services and better learning conditions. As mentioned in the article, there are benefits given to students now, not just things

do you think paid for all the things we have on campus now? It was all the people who paid into a building fund ten or twenty years ago - not you!

I think the building fund is a great idea - I don't know a university that doesn't have one. What I don't understand is why people would be so selfish and short-sighted to want their money back, and why the university allows people to get this money back. I don't think I'm allowed to get my money back for the sports centre, but [rarely use it. I never goto the women's centre, or listened to the radio station, but I still paid for them. I really don't care, since it's allowing other people who do use these facilities to enjoy them. Life is not all about one's self - it's about other people too.

Everybody complains of student apathy regarding attendance at the Barn. There's a reason for this. Events at the Barn this year have been a series of fiascos. From Uisce Beatha to Moxy Fruvous, events have been poorly planned and abysmally advertised. Last year, Moxy Fruvous packed the Barn, and could have done so again, if only people knew of the event - which wasn't even advertised on the lit sign in front of the Barn, whereas a limited interest event, the Bio Club Pub Crawl, was.

Though the sold-out Hallowe'en Pub was a success for Jon financially, it was certainly lacking. In previous years, the line outside the Barn moved quickly and efficiently, however, this year even pre- paid ticket holders were forced to wait outside in an excessively slow-moving line, which we can only guess is due to the poor management of the admittance procedure. It makes me wonder if the Barn sold more advance tickets than capacity allows. Perhaps the Barn was too busy counting their profits to bother caring about the quality of the event. :

Jon, students can't be expected to go to the Bam because it's on campus; you have to make us want to come, and that means you are going to have to work at your job - you can't just rely on the same tired old bands and the success of the occasional event. We haven't given up on the Barn yet, but we're starting to.

After receiving a large number of e-mails, I got the impression that afew people were not impressed with the Barn on Halloween night. While thelarge majority hada good time there were, as always, some complaints. First off, when there isa sold out event and all the people with tickets show up within a halfhour ofeach other a line upisinevitable. Every person has to be checked for I.D. and with everybody wearing masks and make-up it takes a

little longer. Thebehaviour of the peoplein theline, however, isup tothe peopleinline. The people that butt in line do so under their own discretion, and try as they may the Campus Police cannot do muchabout it with everything that's going on inside. The Barn will doitsbestto improve on the areas that need it. It seems you're damned if no one comes and damned if everyone does.
