The Abuses of Vivisection.

Authoritative comments leave no room for doubt that the atrocious vivi- section sometimes practised or suggested by pseudo-scientists is as abhorrent to

bysicians as to laymen. On the other any the utility of legitimate vivisec- tions in promoting the welfare of the human race and the races of domesticat- ed animals has been abundantly demon. strated, most tangibly of all, perhaps, durii,z the past decade, in reference to brain surgery and to bacterial diseases. This being freely conceded by practically al! qualified observers, it would seem that the main problem of vivisection (so long a ‘‘vexed question”) is in a fair way to be worked out to the mutual satisfac- tion of vivisectors and their aforetime critics. But there is a subordinate phase of the subject somewhat recently pre sented, which one cannot re with so much satisfaction, namely, the grow- ing practice of vivisecting before classes of young pupils in the secular schools. Such an over-zealous applica- tion of the ‘‘scientific method” is fit to ap- pear only in that sorry system of pedago gics which makes light of suntiment and considers the goal of education to be the acquisition of bare facts. In a broader view it must appear that such grewsome exhibitions will have a most unwhole- some effect upon the mind of a child, tending to strengthen rather than to re- press its selfish and cruel instincta) The child who has been taught through “scientific” demonstrations to regard a pet cat or dog as an animated machine with contracting muscles and blood-pro- pelling heart and bile-secreting liver, in- stead of a living being possessed of feel- ings and emotions somewhat akin to its own, can never again regard the sacred mystery of life in quite the same light as befure. It has gained knowledge of very doubtful value at the expense of 2 distinct ethical secrifice. Far better might that child remain ignorant of the appearances of vital organs than lose its awe for the vital principle that ani miates them. If physiological experi ments must enter into the scheme of the nmiodern syetem of education, let them at least, be deferred until moral principles are firmly grounded.

A RETURNED EXODIAN TALKS,

A Moncton Times reporter recently had a taik with Mr. James Howell, a native of Westmorland County, who has been absent in the United States for the last nine years, but who has now returned home with his family to stay. Mr. Howell lived in the town of Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., New York state, a place of about 5000 inhabitants. He says he saw nothing in the United States that ever made him feel like settling permanently in that country. Since returning home he has discovered that a family can live cheaper here than in Uncle Sam/’s territory. In addition to other household utensils he mentioned crockerware as being much cheaper here. Farmers in this country, he savs, are much better off than in the section of New York siate where he lived. They realize about two cents more for their beef and the ruling prices generally are more stationary. Eggs are down to nothing almost this spring. A fair price is sometimes realized for potatoes, while at other times the price is away down. Cheese is two cents a pound higher here than there. Mr. Howell lived about 30 miles from where Mr. Taylor, M. P. for Leeds, Ont., instituted inquicies recently with a view to comparing the prices in Canada and the United States. Mr. Howell noted Mr. Taylor’s report and says it was correct, not a single statement being ex- aggerated. Speaking about wages, he saye millmen where he came from were working for $l per day and were required to labor 114 hours at that.

Miss Beveridge, it is said, as broken with Coghlan for good, and will shortly eailfor Germany. where she has an offer for next season.
