Forty Knots an Hovur.—At the recent meeting of the British Association Sir William White, the great naval architect, expressed the opinion that a speed of forty knots an hour may yet be possible at sea. If accomplished, it will be through the agency of the Parsons’ rotary engine, which ‘8 attracting very wide-spread at- tention atipresent, but epeed, unless it is of commercial atility, will not be a great ac~ qusition to the world. A very fast vessel isthe torpedo boat destroyer, the Quail She iscqual toathirty knot gait, but is rare'y operated, at that rate of speed on account of the damage it does to the vessel and its engines. The Quail is a mere racing shell, with space for little more than her bpilers and machinery. So restricted is her ca- pacity that she cannot carry more than ninety tons of coal, which will oniy serve to navigate her fer 1,600 miles at full speed. To crossthe Atlantic without re- cosling in the course of a voyage she would require to economise fuei by travel- ling at the rate of ten knots an hour or less Speed that is thus obtained at the sacr fi e of aship’s capacity, will, ov. .f} no advantage to commerce. Only the highly specialized vessel will reach forty nots an hour, but there are many ex- perts who believe that mail steamers will soon be operated at the rate of thirty Knots.
