U.PE.I. football: An unrealistic

move at the wrong time

FRECENTLY STUDENTS AND THE general public have witnessed a considerable effort by certain individuals to reestablish football as a varsity team sport at U.P.E.1. A considerable amount of media attention has been generated by these people and a petition started. The University administration appears to have defused the controversy by pointing out the university's dismal funding situation. The whole idea of people lobbying for the reinstatement of football at U.P.E.l. left me feeling very unsettled, though.

With provincial government funding to U.P.E.I. still frozen and the university's future funding seemingly unlikely to improve soon, it is almost difficult to believe that there are people so oblivious to our financial situation that they would seek to promote football as a priority for this institution. Tuition has

risen an average of 9.74% each year for the past four years. If a lack of proper government funding has resulted in students’ fees being raised at a rate about 10% higher than the rate of increase in wages and

raising could provide sufficient funding for a football team, its reinstatement would still be a-step in the wrong direction and even morally unjustifiable. Athletics have had a proud and distinguished history at U.P.E.I.,

...it is almost difficult to believe that there are people so oblivious to our financial situation that they would seek to promote football as a priority for this institution.

student assistance, football must only be seenasan inconsequential luxury with which this university and all those people truly interested in its best interests cannot afford to concern themselves.

Even if alumni and private sector fund-

but it is keeping education accessible to students that must remain the University’s top priority, far above all else. There can be very little doubt that education accessibility has declined over the late 1980's and early 1990's. If alumni and businesses were to

donate more money to the university, then | believe it would be the moral responsibility of all of us who really care about the university and its role to convince would-be donors to donate this money to projects that wouldactually help students -- bursaries for students in situations of especially severe need and capital projects such as a new chemistry building and new student centre. These needs must be put before any non- essentialadditions to the university. Perhaps it is even time, unfortunately, for the university community to start examining how much longer it can afford to maintain the present number of varsity teams at U.P.E.I., letalone considering re-establishing football. The responsibility of the University to keep education accessible to people of ordinary means must always be its first

priority.

Papa Joe's

WWE WERE COLD AND HUNGRY, the closest restaurant was Papa Joe's, so we went. My companion and | had a lovely meal in a nice, quiet atmosphere. Our waitress was perfect in her timing and manner. Upon leaving the restaurant we struck up a conversation with the person working cash. He was also very friendly and said come again-- | believe we will. | give Papa Joe’s 4 cookies.

Sam/’s Lunch Bar and Steakhouse

It was a great spot for lunch, but I'd like to go back again, before | do a review. -Jennifer

The Met Cafeteria, Summerside Over the Xmas break | made my way to Summerside and found the best coleslaw I've ever eaten. | also found good prices, friendly staff, and good hot food. If you ever make it to Summerside, stop in at the Met for lunch, or even just for coffee. | give the Met 4 cookies.

First off I’d like to make an apology to the management and staff of Apothecaries. In the last issue before the Christmas break, Apothecaries was reviewed. | made a statement about service which was entirely uncalled for. | have since talked to several people about Apothecaries, and every one was very impressed with the restaurant's service. I’m sorry and | wish Apothecaries best of luck in 1994.

-Papa Joe’s

Papa Joe's is a family restaurant on University Avenue (in the old Ponderosa location). They serve a wide variety of Canadian and Lebanese cuisine. The prices are low- especially if you order the lunch or dinner special. Specials include dessert, and I've always come away stuffed. | have only sampled the Lebanese menu once, but | : want to try more! | especially recommend the fish and the chicken- and the salads (traditional and lebanese)-and the desserts. The staff is quick and cordial and the overall atmosphere is very comfortable and friendly.

Lord Selkirk dining room This is probably the highest class review you will ever read from me. My boyfriend recently took me out to the Lord Selkirk Room at the CP hotel, thanks to a “buy one get one free” coupon.

We both walked in feeling somewhat intimidated, trying to remember what our

mothers taught us about dining manners. Fortunately, we had a great waitress (Ms. LaRonde) who put us at ease.

The atmosphere was perfect, down to the display flowers. The tables for two were a bit awkward as they were placed in a corner in such a way that conversation was difficult and there was no feeling of intimacy.

We started the meal with a Caesar salad, which was made at our table (a nice touch). Both of our entrées were delicious, and my Grand Mamier Cake for dessert was spectacular to say the least.

My one complaint was the bread. It was wonderful while hot, but became too hard when it cooled.

| highly recommend going there. The prices are expensive, but the portions are generous and the experience is worth it. They also have a fixed price meal worth looking into. The entire meal is approximately 26 dollars, and includes choices of wines, appetizers, entrées, and desserts.

Since | floated out of the CP in culinary ecstasy, I’m giving them a full five cookies. - Aldera Chisholm
