Mr. Lorrxe, the United States Commis- sioner of Agriculture, declares that, by per- sonal experiment, it costs $l 60 per pound to make sugar from sorghum. His failure nee not be conclusive evidence, however, tor at Rio Grande, N. J., it is made cheaply, and in the Carolinas the farmers make good molasses from that ‘eame. Re- sides these, we could take him to places in the Coun'y of Essex, im our own Untario, where sorghum syrup is made. But the Phila- delphia Record insinustes that if Mr. Cor- missioner Loring were to set about raising even wheat, at the Agricultural Department, it would have cost Uncle Sam $5 per bushel.

One of Montreal’s richest heiresses, Miss Henrietta McKay Gordon,adopted dangtyter and niece of the late Joseph Andrew Edward McKay, who made a great fortane in dry goous, died suddenly Sunday night last, from consumption. ~Joseph McKay built a splendid asylum for deaf mutes, and his brother endowed it in his lifetime. He also bequeathed it a large sum befcre his demise.
The alleged prevalence of cholera among hogs is not nearly so bad as has been re- ported. The Chief Veterinary Inspector,
r. McEachern, of Manitoba, expresses the opinion that the trouble will not be of long duration. There is no necessity for alarm, aud the inspector does nvt* consider it necessary to declare Montreal an infected district, as all the diseased animals have been killed, and there is no spread of the disease.
A timely joke is a potent weapon. The other day Mr. Blaine published a letter in which he proposed to divide the revenue on whiskey among the States. Some genius at once replied: ‘*Keep the revenue and divide the whiskey among the people.” Perhaps the joke did not leal to Mr, Blaine’s suggestion being laughed out of politics; but his letter has been lost sight of as quickly as if it were a billetdropped into the ocean.
At a meeting of the shareholders of the Ottawa, Waddington & New York Railroad Company, held in Ottawa on the 11th inst., it was resolved to proceed with the con- struction of the railway, and in the event of the Government persisting in their re- fusal to permit the bridging of the St. Lawrence at Morrisburg, to have the cars conveyed across the river at that point by steamer, as is done at Prescott.
Professor Von Brunning died in the New Haven Hospitsl, Conn., on lhe 7th inst., from the effects of the amputation of a diseased foot. He was known as the ‘tramp musician.” He was born in Ger- many and when he came to this eountry several years ago possessed $75,000 which he lost gambling. He finally beeame a tramp and lived in a shanty at Black Rock, He possessed rare musical ability.
In one of the Lofoden Islands, off the coast of Norway, if a deep and tideless lake of considerable extent, connected with an inlet from the ocean by a short and shal- low ditch. The important discovery has been lately made that this lake, though it contains so little salt that the water is not unpleasant to the taste, is stocked with herrings, which not only thrive but breed there. They are so numerous that thirtytons of them were netted in a few days this season. The story is that they multiply faster and flourish better than in the sea, for the reason that the lake con- tains none of their natural enemies. _
