New Sounnmn Arrsnarus.—Mr. Laignel has submitted to the Academy of Sciences, at Paris, a notice of a new apparatus for sounding at sea. during the passage of a vessel through the water. At present, it frequent- ly happens, when a vessel is going at a quick rate, that the lead comes to descend,and even returns towards the surface. By the new apparatus, the line is made to fall by the progress oftho vessel, on the same principle, in the inverse way, as akite rises by the apparent action of drawing it to. wards the holder of the string. A disk of wood, to which the lead is at- tached. is made bytJte action ofthc apparatus in the resistance that it sustains, to plunge towards the bot- tom.

A SHOCKING Dan". —A man nam- ed Maxon. of Ceres, Pa. was killed and had his legs burned off to the knees at his sap furnace, on the l7th tilt. He had been boiling sap at the foot ofa rise ofground. when his fire getting low, he cut off a large oak log. above the fire, and fearing that it might roll against his kettles,thrust a handspike under one end of the log to direct its course away from the tire. The end ofthe log rolled on to the handspike with such force as to crush Maxom under it—and crowding his legs into the fire, they were burn- ed ofi‘to the knees!
