LA Good Price for Potatoes — Oats

Steady - Live Hogs Quiet.

In the past week there has been an

active demand, throughouc this Province, for potatoes, which are scarce, at 45 cents

per busbel. Oats are steady at from 38 to 40 cents per bushel.

Pork is not offering; but loads of live hogs continue to some in, the prices being for vwacon bogs 5 cents per lb. and for heavy fat hogs 4} cents,

Eggs are in good supply at 8} cents per dozen,

THE PROVISION MARKET.

Steady — Chicago -— Strong Montreal Unchanged.

Liverpool

At latest advices there was no change in the situation of the Montreal provision market. A fair trade continues to be done in most lioee and prices rule steady. We quote: Canadian pork, $15.50 to 16 per barrel ; pure Canadian lard,in pails, at 81c to 84c; and compound refined at 54c¢ to 5}c per |b., hams, 11 jc to 12c, and bacon, 12c per Ib

There wasa very rapid rise in the Chicago provision market which was due to shorts covering. Pork advanced 7c to 72 1-2c, closing $12.25 May ; $12.40 July; $12 55 September.

There wasnocbanze in the Liverpool

provision market. Pork clored 63s 9d; lard, 33s, long cut heavo bacon, 36-; long cut ] gt t.3 e: SHort cul | grit, Bde; and

tallow, 21s; cheese, white, 41s, colored 43s.

Cheese Quiet—A Comparison of This and Last Season’s Opening— Butter Steady.

The Montreal Gazette repor ts that cheese

while not quotably altered, is rather easier in its tone. Based on iast week’s purchases, at country points, the spot market should be an 8c to 8 1-4c one, but buyers on spot are pot disposed to freely concede this range. In fact, demand ia narrow, being confined largely to a few operators. En- qviry in England also, since the boom of a few weeks ago, has slackened. It is interesting to observe that both the receipts and the cflerings of cheese at the different country boarde, since the lat of May, bear out the statemeat that the early make is not much over one quarter what it was last spring. Up to the 14 b, the offr- ings at the different boards were only 12,- 300 old boxes, againsi 21,761 for the same period last year. Prices this year are 5 8c to 1 1~2c below last year’s level, being 7 3-4c to 8 1-8c this sprivg against 9 1-4c to 9 3. 4c last spring.
