A Fatal Warning.

THE STORY OF A GIRL WHO SAW THE

SPIRIT OF HER MOTHER FORETELLING DEATH. In his treatise on “Spirits,” Jobn

Beaumont relates a very siugalar ac- count of an apparition seen by the duughter of Sir Charles Lee, and relat- ed to the Bishop of Gloucester, by the lady father. It is considered one of the best authenticated stories on record.

Sir Charles had a daughter by his first wife, who died in childbirth. At her

own desire, Lady Everard, sister of the deceased lady, had the child with her to raise and educate, and kept the little girl till she was of marriageable age. Ultimately, Miss Lee was engaged to Sir William Perkins, and the marriage wss agreed upon, when it was prevent- elin a singular manner. “Upon a Thursday,” to qnote the Bishop’s own words, **Miss Lee, thinking she saw a lightin her chamber after she was in bed, knocked for her maid, who present- ly came to her, and she asked her why she had left a candle burning in ber room. The maid said she had left none, and that there was no light in the room but what she had brought with her at that time. Then she said it was the tire, but that, the maid told her, was quite out, and said she believed it was only adream, Whereupon she said it might be so, and composed herself to sleep again. But about 2 she was awakened again, and saw the apparition of a little woman between her curtain and pillow, who told her she was her mother ; that she was happy, and by 12 o'clock that day she would be with her. Whereupon she knocked for her maid, called tor her clothes, aud when she was dressed went to her ciovet and came not out again until 9, and chen brought out with her a letter sealed and address- ed to ber father. She gave it to her aunt, the Lady Everard, told her what had happened, and desired that when she was dead it should be sent to him. But the iady thought she was suddenly fallen mad, and thereupon sent present- ly away to Chelmeford for a physician and surgeon, who both came imme- diately, but the physician could discern no indication of what the lady imagin- ed or of any indisposition of the body. Notwithstanding, the lady would have her bled, which was done accordingly. And when the young woman had patiently let them do whatthey would with her, she desired that the chaplin might be called to read prayers, and when the prayers were ende@ she took her guitar and hymn-book and» played and sang so melodiously and admirably that her music master, who was there, admired it. And near the stroke of 12 she rose and sat down ina large easy chair, and presently, fetchiag a strong breath or two, she expired, and was so suddenly cold as was much wondered at by the physician and surgeon. She died ut Waltham, in Esser, and the letter

was sent to Sir Charles at his house in Warwickshire, but he was so affiicted at her death that he came not till she was buried. But when he came he caused her body to be taken up to be buried by her mother in Edmonton, as «he had desired in her letter. The event oceurred in 1662, and there is no record of any further manifestation in the house.

This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of their durability, which is accounted forin the foliowing :—It has, instead of a Linea Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense connected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to ienew Linings and Grates, at least once or twice every year, ‘The heat being radiated from the Cylin- ders to the floor, where wmost needed, overcomes a_ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Cooking S‘oves. The Cyiinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with equal sati*faction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel.
