—Commenting on this paragraph a correspondent of the Halifax Herald says:—
‘| am in a position to state, on the very best authority,that Lord Coleridge did meet Professer Goldwin Smith when in this country. The facts of the case are these: Lord Coleridge had contemplated visiting Canada, but while in the United States he received a number of threatening letters, warning him not to come. He, however, wished to see Professor Smith, and an arrangement was made to meet him at Niagaza, incognito. . This meeting did take place, and Lord Coleridge was accorpan- ied by three detectives. The incident may not be publicly known, but it proves that the chiet justice did ‘go out of his way’ to meet him.
—Another reassuring fact in con- nection with the financial position of Cavada is that the balance due Care- dian banks from abroad, is nearly seven millions of dollars greater than it was a mouth ago. The Montreal Guzelte explains that the increase is in part due to shipments of grain and produce, but mainly to the arrangement between the Canadian Pacific Company and the Goverument, under which a deposit of uine millious was made by the company in the Bank of Moatreal in New York to ihe credit of the Government. This transaction crops, out, also, in the state- ment of the Dominion Government deposits, which are $4,710227 larger on the mouth. Biscay. The passengers and crew, num- bering eighty souls, took to four boats, two of which only have yet been reported picked up by passing vessels. The two remaining boats, with some fifty souls, are thought to have been lost. >
