One, the view from the King’s Bastion, is at Windsor Castle, while the other, the view of the city from Point Levis, has been taken by Her Majesty to Osberne.
ine Board of Education of Manitoba has, in consequence of the rise in the valuation of land throughout the Province, appoint- ed a commiasion to enquire what school lands have reached the maximum value and to report and to prepare for the considera- tion of the Board an address to the D.min- ion Government, to be presented through the Local Government in relation to the sale of such lands.
Major Rogers will again assume the management of the Rocky Mountain sur- vey, and four parties will leave early in April to continue the exploration of last year. Three of the parties will operate from the west side of the Rockies and the other from the east side. The objective

The pesession of tact, and an apt perceptien of the wants ofa buyer, by the salesmas, no matter what the wares he is offering, is an abselute essential to his suceess. More especially is this true of the retail salesman. A careless, supereillion of negligent manager, will often affect a customer se that, ne matter how lew the price of the goods may be or hew well they suit, (he er she) will depart without purchasing, for the single and simple reasun that the salesman did not knew his business or did not cour- teously perferm his duty. Even gruff- abrupt quickness would be better than this; for this semetimes eonveys the impression that the goods are the sheapest, or the best that can be got, and therofore do not demand from him any effort other than the take-them-er leave-them style.
All of our readers have seen this sort of salesman : nsuperfine creature with waxed mustazehe and supereillous uir, and an altogether lardydah, ain’t I-an- admirable being, bearing about him. Dr. Wallace, F. R. 3. E., F. 0.*S., Gas Examiner to the City of Glasgow, in @ leciure delivered by him, calculated that £1:1,000 ($650,000) a year. are thrown away in Gias- wow by the use of imperfect fittings. On the subject of Gas Burners he says; “ Another and as I thivnk a better Burner is that called Bray’s regulator, a: d as I consider these the best unicrn Burners attainable at moderate cost, I bave selected them for a series of ex- periments.”
The Keport of the Committee of the British Association of Science to enquire as to ihe best means forthe developmen of light trom Coal Gas of different qualities—comprising Dr. William Wallace, Professor Dittm tr, and Mr. Thomas Wills, F, U.S., F. I. C. E., showed that Bray’s Burners yielded the greet, st amount ot light of all the two or three score of Barners reported upon. which included all the Burcers of repute in the market,
In & pampilet upon Light and Heat, pub- lished by R. B. Taver, A. M., he says: “The cost of Gas as compared with other illumin- ants is much more economical when rightly used, than many suppose. From experiments made for this purpose, the following results have been obtained. They were made by burning sannples of Devoe’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils, and testing their illuminating power, It was found that Coal Gas costing one cent at ¢3 per thousand fect, gave a light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil cousuming 27.4 grammes cost- ing halfacent, gave a light: qual to 9 candles.
“A good Argand or Julioson’s Burner, the Burner’s used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordimary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas of the finer and safer grades of Oil. Lights, however, on the author- ity of scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in proportion to the squares of their powers, and such acom- parison with the case of tue use of (as, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desira\yle wherever it can be satroduced,”
As the above experiments were made with Gas at $3 per 1600 feet, and not consumed through Bray’s Burners, it will readily be seen bow wauch more economical it is to con- sume Gas instead of Oi, when its price is only $2.63 per 100 feet as now charged bere wien consumed, more especially through dray's Burn rs.
