Nicholson's work d-id not stop at the operation of mines, however. He became an authority on the con- centration of ores, and joined other operators in the study and prac- tice of this angle of the industry. This resulted in the ﬁrst carbonate of zinc ores found in the Leadviiile district. The climax of this study came wiith the discovery of the zinc ore which bears his naime, "nicholsonlte."

iBeing one of the most popular. as well as one of the leading citi , zcns of the booming mining town he was elected mayor of Lesdville in 1893 and at the cud of his term of office was re-elected and served until 1897. The lawless element of the boom days required a cour» ageous man to enforce the law s-nd when the Lead-ville miners‘ strike of 1896 developed it was ne- cessary to call the state troops. Warm praise has been accorded Nicholson ‘for the way in which he handled that difficult situation.
