NEW FABRICS HANDSOME i DRESS PICTURE HIGHER

New York — A handsome new fabric may well be the reason a woman buys a new dress this spring. Without the new — and newly revived — weaves,.textures and colours turned out by the yard goods makers, the 1949 Easter Pa- rade would look about the same as lost year's. ~

The biggest fabric.to tempt the buyer in high-style dress houses ,, n to be alpaca,‘ the smooth uli-and-shiny llama and silk com- bination which drapes so richly for dresses, suits or coats.

Silk shantungs. many of them printed, other crisp and irrides- cent as taffeta. are widely used.

Chiffon is coming back into its own, no longer strictly for garden party wear but tidiiy tailored for any hour from noon on. Beside it is old-fashioned cotton mull, a soft, light-weight and ladylike material for summer dresses.

Silk prints have new texture-like patterns rather than pictures. Cot- tons, too run to tone-on-tone of self-coloured men's shirting weaves rather than contrasting patterns. Other cottons have been woven like tweeds arid other wooliens.

lightweight wool tweeds and ‘smooth finished woois and worsteds appear to be leading‘ gab- ardlne for suits for the first time in years.

in many. cases dress designers have made their own fabrics with all-over tucking in squares, dia- monds and pyramids.

Even hat makers have gone in for a new variety in terlall, with transparent nets and elilngs, sheer chiffdns, ordinary wrapping string and a variety of dress fabrics stand- ing out between the straws and felts.

SHOE OF FUTURE HAS NINE INCH HEEL

A ladies‘ “shoe of the future" with nine-inch heels was recently shown to visitors at the London Shoe and Leather Fair. - - It looks a little bit like n short cowboy boot made of black suede trimmed with golden lizard.

And it has pockets on the side to carry rcompact. a lipstick and a purse. ., - -

The exhibitors said they realized the model is a little advanced for 1949, so the shoe is for exhibition only.

The sun went down that evening in a blaze of ruby and gold.

It flooded the long turns of the Clyde River to the westward, right up to the very nenith, with a wealth of opaleecent‘ glory that transform- ed river and sky alike into a pic- ture that lighted up the arc ofhea- ven and the narrow band of water beneath, stretching out into illimit- able space.

From the first gray streak of dawn the weather had taken on a threatening aspect, and the wind had been shifting about like a rest- less spirit, causing the white horses of Neptune to gambol over the bosom of the ever-rising billows which tossed up and down the rowboat in which Alec Cameron was trying to paddle toward his home at the mouth of the stream. Now, young Cameron had follow- ed the life of a fisherman since his twelfth birthday, having come to the support of his mother and only sister after the tragic drowning of his father on the south shore. The melancholy moan of the surging waters, the thundering voice of the sea gods, affected him but lit- tle, for, young as he was, he was accustomed to hearing their voices. All morning and afternoon young Cameron had been slowly pushing his tiny boat into the teeth of a strong nor'east gale. ‘The breeze freshened as the day wore on, be- ing now accompanied, toward sun- set, by frequent sharp gusts, a_ sign plain enough to a seamen‘: eye that trouble lay ahead.

Glancing over the side, he saw quite a large boat approaching. She was running under her Jib and fore- sall. being only square-rigged for- ward, like ocean steamers he had often seen. As an unusually fierce gust swept her from her course, and her broadaides ‘ecame visible, he was able to read her name, The Black Ace.

With her piece of canvas topping her hull, The Black Ace roiled this way and that, while now and then her stern rose high out of the water, the screws whizzing ‘round aimless- ly in e air. (This is known as "racin ’ in the lingo of the sea). While Alec watched the strug- gling vessel a strange thing hap- pened, and so suddenly that he could never account for it after- ward.

It may have been a trick of the sea-gods that lifted him and his boat high out of the water and set them down on the deck of The Black Ace.

Once aboard the other ship, he was amazed to find her crew a boisterous group of seamen with no more thought of the danger they were facing than if they had been sitting calmly in their homes. Upon further observation our young hero discovered that no one was at the helm. The captain and the mate both lay in a drunken stu- por near the cabin, while those of the crew who were sober enough to remain on deck raised their voices ln snatches of old sea-songs that could be heard , above the sound of the bubbling foam and the howling of the wind. All the while the vessel plunged and staggered, rose and fell. as she was caught in the fury of the storm, and Cameron found it difficult to keep his foot- ing.

Finally a great mass of fire. stretching as far as the eye could see. swept down upon them, en- folding The Black Aee, until the en- Ire setting looked for all the world like an ever-widening belt of dia- monds fringed'wi'th'a million eyes.

Alec knew that no ship could long withstand such wind and sea and fire, especially when there wasno helmsman to steer ‘a course, and he was not surprised when. some half hour later, The Black Ace blew up and went to the bottom with her crew of drunken seamen.

As to how long he remained in the water he would not even hazard a guess, but he had a dim recollec- tion of going down and coming up score; of times before the dawn opened its eye and enabled him to see his own bark drifting aimless- ly upon the bosom of the turbulent river.

Hungry and exhausted and chil- led to the marrow, he eventually reached it and climbed aboard. By this time a party of anxious neigh- bors sighted the distressed craft and, setting out in another rowboat, effectefliiis rescue.

The strange tale which youhave Just read afforded many a night's entertainment for the people of Clyde River and vicinity, long years after Alec Cameron had been gathered to his fathers.

The basis of a chowder is usual- ly a protein. Foods sucli as fish. meet, beans or cheese are usually one of the ingredients. Any real chowder has a sewwl Quint"? of potatoes.

While there are many excellent recipes for chowders. this is one place where ille cook lid-dill 09- portunlty to use her ingenuity. Fresh, canned or leftover cooked vegetables may be used toIQi-iiflf and the quantities of each varied to suit thifailllpiy- .

The home economist of the Con- sumer Section, Marketing Service. Dominion Department. of Agricul- ture, suggest the following recipes for chowders‘.

ONION CHOWDER

3 cups sliced onion

2 tablespoons fat

4 cups boiling water

2 cups diced potatoes

2 teaspoons salt

I cups milk .

1 cup grated cheese

2 tablespoons minced parsley.

Cook onions in fat for, five minutes. Add boiling water, p0- atoes and salt. Cook until vege- tables are tender. Add milk. grated cheese and parsley. Reheat and serve at onoe. Yield: six servings.

POTATO CARROT CHOWDER

2 tablespoons fat medium onion. minced cups diced raw potato cups diced raw carrot cups boiling water teaspoons salt teaspoon pepper teaspoon paprika teaspoon celery salt tablespoon flour- tabieqioon melted fat cups hot milk.

Melt fat in soup kettle, add onion and cook 5 minutes without browning. Add potatoes, carrots and water, cook until vegetables are tender. Add seasonings. Mix flour with melted fat. blend in hot. milk. Add to vegetables and cook 3 minutes longer or until slightly thickened. Two or three cooked sausages or wieners, sliced, may be added, if desired. Yield: six ser- vlngs.
