Tue Grit papers are publishing Mr. Cartwright’s last speech, under the head- ing of ‘“‘debt and deficit.” The heading at least is apt. Mr. Cartwright has added more debt and contributed more deficits than any other Finance Minister in these Colonies—H-x. Herald.

Tre Railway employes will hold their annual pic-nic at Marie on Wednesday next. The Committee appointed by the employers have made great preparations for this pie-nic, and have arranged a pro- gramme which cannot be surpassed. Ii embodies all games and sports—boat race- ing being the chief feature of it. No doubt those who have the pleasure of attending will pass an extremely pleasant day.

Tue Haverly Jubilee Singers gave their second entertainment in the Market Hall, on Saturday evening. The audience was small, but nevertheless the programme was carried through in a manner which refiects credit on the company. ‘They have de- cided to give a third and last entertainment this evening, and in order that the price of admission may be within the reach of all, it has been reduced to 35 and 20 cents.

Apvices from Northumberland assure us that the election of Hon. P. Mitchell by a large majority, is now beyond a doubt. Bismarck in his speech at the closing of the Congress on Saturday, declared that he did not hesitate to attirm that this Congress deserved will of Europe; and that the Plenipotentiaries would have the conscious- ness of having, as far as was possible, restored and assured peace. He _ enter- tained a firm hope that the European un- derstanding would remain durable, and that the cordial relations established among the Plenipotentiaries would consolidate the good relations between their Governments.

Bismarek incidentally remarked that his health was such that he had scarcely hoped to preside over the Congress until its con- clusion.
