Flip had backed out now, and was barking again. Had he given up?

Buttons dearly loved to lick out the last drops of ice cream from the cartons. He ran toward the house.

"Here he is now, Mrs. Blake.” said Brenda as she bent to pick up the kitten. "Buttons, your are going to have a new home. You are going to be a pet for a lttle girl who has no kitten. Now be a lood little cat won't you? Well miss you, but we'll come to see you often!

Buttons tried to hang on to -Brenda. He dtd not want to leave his cosy home, the children who loved him, and go among strangers. But'Brenda passed him over to the woman who stroked his head and talked gently to him. She carried him over to a car and got in.

Mrs. Blake talked in hiln and petted him, to try to stop his trembling. After a while the car stopped. and she lifted him out. lie heard a girl's voice. Eagerly he

"Marnie seems to be very nice. She likes me. This place may not be too bad after all. I'll just wait and see."
