A most peculiar circumstance hap- pened at the Coal Harbor Dyke during the recent thunder storm. <A diver was at work, and the lightning got into the air pump, and was forced down to the man iu the water; the men in the beat noticed something wrong,had the driver brought to the surface, when he was found to be completely exhaasted,

A man named Michaud, living about Grand Falls, built a railroad car. It consisted of four wheels, two large and two small, rouod which went a square linked chain. The car is moved by a crank, aud goes at incredible speed. Michaud lives at St. Basil and works at St Leonard. Ina the morning he goes to work on his car. in the evening he rides home on it. A few evenings ago, just at dusk, the section men saw what they thought a phantom flit along the road. They pursued and captured it. It was Michaud and his oar, They sent it to Gibson and it is there now a mar- vel of untanght ingenuity.— Fredericton

The Government of the United States has determined on a step which wiil render important aid to the cause of Arctic exploration. This is the estab- lishment of a colony of explorers, con- sisting of fifty select men, under the leadership of Captain Chester, who has already won a reputation in that braneh of science, having taken part in the fa- mous Polaris expedition. The colony will be permanently stationed as near as it is possible to maintain life usefully tothe Nerth Pole. As our readers are aware, the British Government has sig- nified its desire that Canada should en- gage in a similar enterprise, for which its vast range of circumpolar territory) is naturally thought to offer peculiar facilities. No doubt, we shail soon bear of the Government having author- ized the organization and equipment of the necessary foree. But we suppose it will first be requisite to fix upon the locality where the expedition will have its headg uarters.
