Down on Lacer Betr,—Fer the past three years Chief David Legault, of the Revenue Police of Montreal, bas been quietly at work in the endeavor to obtain judgement against the eale of the so-called non-alcoholic temperence beer. He has at last succeeded, as by the deeision of Judge Desnoyers, in the case of Philip Murphy, who was fined for selling this kind of lager, many other seizures have been made. During last week over 100 shops were raided, and the harvest was fruitful, barrels on barrels were carted away, and «tored in the revenue office, cor~ ner of St. Gabriel and St. James streets. Vesterday, Verdun, Lachiue and St. Lam- bert were visited, but in the latter plsce nothing was found; in Verdun about 100 bottles were taken.

El Dorado is the term now Szard on ev ery side in connection with the places mines of Alaska and the Northwest Terri tories of Canada. Its derivation is of inter est. In the fifteenth century it was ru- mored that there existed in ths northern part of South America a city of great wealth called Mansa, whose king, E) Dorado by name, was periodically smeared with oil or balsam and was then powdered with gold dust until his ), hole body had a gilded appearance. It was said that on these occasions he threw gold, emeralds and other precious metals and gems into a sacred lake, in which he afterward bathed.

Beginning in 1522 the Spaniards sent many large expeditions to search for this phantom city, and most of them ended disastrously, hundreds of lives being lost. One explorer, Orellano, averred that he found El Derado in his voyage down the Amagson in 1540. This was disproved, but the search was continued down to the cighteenth century. Some of the results were the conquest and settlement of New Granada, the making known to the world of the mountain region of Veneauela the discovery of the noble rivers the Orinoco and the Amazon and the exploration of the vast forests west of the Andes. About the end of the sixteenth century an Eng- lish expedition cither sent out by or under the personal leadership of Raleigh pene- trated into Guiana, thereby obtaining a claim on that country which has resulted in the acquirement of the modern British
