Professor Profile Vaughn Jelliffe

TS When did you start teaching at UPEI?

VJ Sept. 1986

TS Where did you start your womens studies de- gree?

VJ Iwas in the first graduating class of women’s studies at Carleton University. I was also teaching at Carleton while taking my degree. Prior to that I was teaching at Alganquin College.

TS How did you get women studies here at UPEI? VJ loffered to teach it as part of the extensions program.

TS What are some of the things you were involved in?

VJ In1979,80,81 I was involved in getting clause 28, the equality clause in the constitution. I was followed by police and had my phone tapped at differ- ent periods during this time.

TS How do you put up with everything that is said about you and your course?

VJ Its not my main focus. When your involved in the womens movement you become atarget. Iam concerned though how it affects other women. Its like turning the radio off the station, its annoying but you just tune it out.

TS What are some things you enjoy?

VJ (With a relaxed smile on her face). I enjoy my daffodils that are coming up, gardening, reading, music, cooking, I have exciting friends, Iam enjoying working ona relationship with a man and seeing this relationship grow, I enjoy cuddles, hugs and physical closeness, I have wonderful children a 21 year old son, a 12 year old daughter and a 17 year old daugh- ter, whom I love very much.

Ihave taken Vaughn’s women studies class and I have enjoyed it very much. Vaughn isa very warm person, and she adds a lot of insight into areas I’m just step- ping into. Vaughn isa good role model and I think if anyone who had made comments in the paper about Vaughn but have never met her or taken her course give hera chance and take one of her classes. You have nothing to lose and one much needed insight top
