Hon Roperr Lowe recently ‘‘ broke down’ while speaking in the English House of Com- mons. The House sympathized with him and encouraged him to proceed. But he seemed to have lost his head for the time; and, bitter- ly mortified, he was obliged to take his seat. The failure of a practiced orator, such as Mr. Lowe, is most singular.

Arrivats.—The following vessels, from European ports, arrived in this port last night: The barque J/sobel, McLeod master, and brig Lauretia, McRae master, both owned by Messrs. Welsh & Owen, arrived from Rouen in ballast; brig Alpheta, owned by Peake Bros. & Co., arrived from St. Piere, Miq., where she landed part of her cargo, consisting of general merchandize. A Taree mite Foor-race, between Patrick Duffy and Michael Halfpenny, —both of this City,—for $100 a side, took place at Moose- path, St. John, on Friday t. The Tele graph says Duffy took the start and led by about 20 yards, which distance was preserved for three-quarters of the first lap, six laps being required to make the three miles. When within one hundred yards of completing the first lap, Duffy suddenly stopped, alleging that one of the spikes of his shoe ran up into his toe, and that he had cramps. Halfpenny continued and made a quarter-mile before Duffy started again. His start was greeted with loud cheers. After running one-half round, he stopped ito take off his shees. On reaching the grand stand jhe had _per- ceptibly gained upon his competitor, but was evidently much exhausted. After the first round, Halfpenny gained steadily, and on the fourth round hed gained three-quarters of a lap, Halfpenny passed under the wire on his second mile in ten minutes. On the fourth lap, Duffy ceased running and Halfpeny came up alongside. Duffy Leas away spiritedly for a short dis- tance but again ceased down to a walk, allow ing Halfpenny to pass him. The race was virtually from that point. When Halfpeny reached the referee's stand he claimed that he had made the six laps, but the referee decided nos, and cries of ‘‘Go on, Halfpenny, and win your money.’ He entered the next lap, pro- vesting that he was on his seventh lap. As Duffy was off the track, Halfpenny leisurely passed around the track and made the three miles in ‘20.30 official time. Accorpine to notice, a meeting for the organization of the above-named Society was held in Dr. Strickland’s office on Satur- day evening. It was largely attended, and, judging from the officers of the Society, it is evident that a determined effort will be made to protect our Island game.

The Sportsman announces that J. W. Bristow,.of Auburn, N. Y., at Newcastle yesterday, proposed toe Elliott’s backers to to match Charles Courtney, of Union Springs, N. Y., against Elliott for £200a side—the match to be rowed on Saratoga ‘Lake in August. The matter was discussed ‘and another meeting on the subject ar- ‘ranged.

It is announced that the war office has is- sued circulars asking for 1,200 volunteers from the regular army for the Cape, and bounties are also offered to men in the mil- itia and reserves who volunteer. The tran- sports ‘‘Seraphis” and ‘‘ Crocodile” have been ordered to be in readiness for the em- barkation of troops.

Itis denied that Russia has demanded from Switzealand the extradition of one of the murderers of Gen. Metzenzeff.

There are indications that the Turks have completely espoused the views of Russia regarding Eastern Roumelia, namely, that the Turkish troops remain outside leaving the assurance of tranquility and the con- sequent re-establishment of Turkish autho- rity te the Russians.

The Porte has declared its readiness to participate in a conference of ambassadors at Constantinople, on the Greek question.

New York, May 9.

George Tyson, who was arraigned before Justice Elliett on Wednesday,on the charge of abandoning his wife, assigned as his rea- son that he was studying for the Ministry and would not be able to support her until he was admitted to orders, which would be in about a year. He left his wife soon after her marriage three years ago.

George 8S. Knight, the well-known Ger- man comedian, is under bonds of $2,000 for assaulting John Rickaby, manager of the Broadway theatre. It is said that Rick- aby’s collar-bone and two ligaments of the shoulders, were broken.

The funeral of a child that died of malig- nant scarlet fever was held in a church at Jamaica, L. I., on Sunday, and since that day an alarming outbreak of the fever has occurred.

Five steamships—four British and one German—carrying freight, which sailed from the United States last winter, and one which sailed from England, are missing; also ten grain laden sailing vessels.

Bargue Unity, (of Richibucto), Capt. Bul- mer, of 420 tons register, from Havre, bound for Sydney, C. B., when in lat. 43.56, lon, 49.20 W., while lying becalmed at midday, and foggy, was run into, on May Ist, by the British steamer Glamorgan, of Liverpool, car- rying away everything forward and splitting stem. The Umity has arrived at North Sydney, and will go on the Marine Railway for repairs. She has been chartered to load oats at Georgetown, P. E. L, for a port in England, at 15 cents a bushel. The steamer was not ilamaged.

MAcDALeEN IsLanps (via Pictou), May 9.— S. S. Albert, from Pictou, N. 8., with mails and passengers, arrived this morning. ‘The weather during the past week has been cold and stormy. The herring fishing has com- menced. Fisk are of a large size and struck in in abundance during the past few days, and most of the vessels in port are nearly loaded. Our sealing vessels have returned well fished, averaging about 7,000 large seals each. The
