YEAR IN REVIEW M

As is the custom with most organizations on this campus, the Cadre got off to a great start. Due mostly to the hard work of a few individuals, a large number of interested people were on hand for the formative meetings of the '71—'72 edition of the Cadre. At these early meetings, the fundamental guidelines of the newspaper were laid down. First, it was decided that the Cadre was to be run on a democratic basis, each member of the staff having a say in deciding every aspect of policy. Staff membership was to be open to every of the student union, as is specified in the S.U. constitution.

One of the first items that came up for consideration was the newspaper's relationship with the Canadian University Press. Itr was felt by some that we should

'withdraw from C.U.P. because of the cost of membership but it

was also pointed out that we could take in almost 32,000.00 on na- tional advertising through our affiliation with this organiza— tion. Finally, it was decided to remain in C.U.P. but it was hoped that C.U.P. news features would not be the main supply of Cadre material, as it was the previous year. Emphasis was to be places on local and campus items. With the publication of the first is- sue, things wsre looking up.

However, like everything else, Staff members quit for a number of reasons —- usually lack of enthusiasm or lack of time. Others came along to take their place but always it seemed as if there were only a few students on this campus who cared about what was going on around them. The rest were lost in their own little worlds. Many were caught up in the academic struggle. They were too worried about "getting by" or "getting

‘good grades" to realize that there is more to life than that. Instead of coming to university to learn about themselves or

about other people (to grow - emotionally, spiritually, etc.) they seem to have come to learn about formulii, equations and theories. Ask them what they think of the,university admin- istration, government policies, the state of their fellow students or of society in general and they would give you some personal formula, equation er theory. Of course this would always be done on a high level of disinterest and they would only complain about something of it personally affected them. Ask them to sup— port some action to remedy these- situations and they would always be too busy. So it was that the Cadre suffered through this plague.

Lots of students were content to sit back and bitch about their powerlessness, the lack of social interaction or even about the Cadre itself, but do you think

they would ever do anything to improve things. Never! Of course, there are quite a few students who feel that they are overburdened with work perhaps Justifiably so, and there have been a fair number who have tried to do something - fi- ftysome people have worked on the Cadre alone. Next year we hope to see more participation in all spheres of campus activities, even if it is only sitting down and writing a letter to the Cadre. If you don't like something here, it is your duty to do the utmost in your power to change it. After all, whether you realize it or not, everything that happens to you while you are attending U.P.E.I. affects your future in one way or another. So do it!!! As the year ends, we would just like to say: HERE'S A HAND FUR THOSE NHO HELPED US -— AND A FINGER FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T!!!
