Come aboad.’ He was then pleas- ed to congratulate himself on his strange luck in having drifted across an {honest man in the middle of an ocean. ‘I’ve heard,’ said he, ‘of an old chap as groped about all his life with a lantern,and couldn't find one. satisfaction oi all patrons, though the rapid time made, some fifteen hours between St. John and Boston, had the
effect at first of deterring a ceriain per- centage of timid travellers from patron- izing this fast express. No coubt in the old days of iron raiis, cumbrous locom: tives and hard running cars, the speed aitained by the Fiying Yankee would have been im- possible, but it should not be forgotien that wondrous strides have been made in railway equipment within a recent period, es- pecially in the Maritime Provinces and New England States. The line from St. John to Boston is nao exception; iron rails bave given to a _ steel track, improved cars have been intro- duced and fast locomotives have taken the place of their less speedy predecessors, so that it is possible for a passenger to ride cs safely and with as much ease and comfort between the Yankee Hub and the Liverpool of America, as between such populous cen- tres as New York and Philadelphia. So far as the provisions for comfort are considered they could hardly be better, the All-Rail Line being supplied with the celebrated Horton’ reclining chairs, which have not even yet been introduced on any other road that traverse any portion of the New Eng- land States. As forthe fast time made between St. John and boston, it is not really so much due to a high rate of speed as to the reduction of the number of stops made on the journey, only a few of the more important stations between St. John and Bangor being recognized by this train. a
A Russian Adventuress.
The death of Countess Henckel of Donnesmark, recalls the memory of the adventurous career of one of the most remarkable of modern aedventuresses. Countess Henckel began life as a poor Russian girl, and was at first married to a tailor. Life with the silent ever-busy husband became dull before long, and one day the tailor found that his wife, and with her his ecant savings, had depaited. She had fled to Paris, where she soon appear- ed in the highest circles as the reputed wife of a rising artist. When it was found out how things really stood she left the gay capital, and after a while turned up in London, where her beauty and intelligence were held to atone for a multitude of sins. After amassing considerable riches in London she turned her back on England, and appeared again at Paris, the gayest among the gay, where she married a rich Portuguese Marquis. She gathered around her many fashion«ble, literary and scientific celebrities, and kept her small court in an elegant residence of the Champ Elysees until the death of the Marquis. She afterwards married the Count Henckel of Donnesmark, and died at the age of seventy-two at the castle which, in imitation of the Tuileries, had been built for her in Silesia. —Pall Mall Gazette. — —_—<— 2 - <<. -
Clergymen to-day are permitted to use more latitude in the choice of their texts than was formerly usual. It is a little startling, nevertheless, to hear of a dis- course of a reverned gentleman on the sub- ject of Cinderella, The occasion was a theatrical performance—the pantomime of Cinderella, in fact, was given in Drury lane some time agd for the recreation of some 3,000 children belonging to the various charitable homes of London. Towards the close of it Canon Shuttleworth came upon the stage to address the assembled young people and he thought the subject of the play might also be made the basis of some appropriate precepts to his little hearers. He urged them to follow Cinderella's ex- ample by putting their whole heart and soulinto whatever they might have to do, even if it were only cleaning a plate or sweeping a floor. They had just been sec- ing fairies on the stage. They, too, might become fairies if they pleased, by bringing light and beauty and brightness into other people’s lives, by their good temper, kind- ness and gratitude. There have been worse sermons preached on more conven- tional texts. f j

The grand jury has indicted William Riley, sixteen years of age, for murder in the first degree for shooting his father at their home near Adrian, Minn. His sister, Mary Riley, thirteen years old, has been indicted and arraigned for being accessory after the fact. The boy will plead guilty, through his attorney, who will make a ‘statement of the causes leading to the crime.
